Palmquist Wins Serena Williams Scholarship

CHARLESTON, SC- College of Charleston track and field athlete Kyle Palmquist has been awarded the Serena Williams Scholarship announced today. Palmquist, a sophomore from Middletown, Conn. will receive the $5,000 scholarship for the 2004-05 academic year and will meet Williams at the Family Circle Cup on Friday.

Palmquist has paced the Cougar's track and field team this season and won the 3000m event in last Saturday's Coastal Carolina Chanticleer Classic in Conway, S.C. Palmquist won the 5000m run at the Weems Baskin Relays in Columbia, S.C. on March 20 defeating the second place runner by 38 seconds.

"We are all very pleased with Kyle receiving this unique honor," said College of Charleston head coach Amy Schuckert. "She is a great student, a great athlete and a wonderful person. She is very deserving of the scholarship."

Palmquist finished 84th in the NCAA Cross Country Regional on November 15th with a 22:31.3. Highlighting her regular season was a first place finish at the Citadel Invitational and she was named Southern Conference Runner of the Week on October 1.

Palmquist and the Cougars will take part in the Elon Invitational on April 17th in Elon, N.C. The SoCon Outdoor Track and Field will be held on May 1-2 in Boone, N.C.
