Women's Outdoor Track and Field 4/12/2004 4:36:00 AM Southern Conference GSU Competes In Spec Town Invitational ATHENS, Ga.- Georgia Southern set six new personal records, a school record, and Nicole Brown won the the triple jump event this weekend at the Spec Towns Invitational. Brown recorded a jump of 42.0-3/4 in the triple jump event, which was not only good enough for first place but also was three and a half feet further than she had ever jumped previously. Her mark set a new Georgia Southern school record as well as qualified her for the NCAA regionals. Brown was not the only Eagle who performed well in the event, as GSU had five of the top seven finishers with Laura Williams, Lauren Jacobs and Mandi Phillips coming in third through fifth respectively and Brittany Chase coming in seventh. Brown also set a new personal record in the 200 meter dash, with a time of 24.92, landing her in eighth place overall. Teammate Giselle Cunningham came in sixth place with a time of 24.77. Brown was a member of the 4x400 relay team (Mincey, Mitchell, Brown, Mincey) that finished second with a time of 3:50.88.Other Eagles who set new personal records were Nikki Slocumb, Markaysa Norwood and Emily Greeson. Slocumb's mark of 130-0 in the discus event earned her ninth place, while Norwood recorded a personal best in the hammer throw with a mark of 122-2, giving her 15th overall. Finally, Greeson's throw of 128-11 in the discus throw marked an all time best for the freshman.Overall, Georgia Southern recorded 32 top ten finishes, including 13 top five performances, in 19 events in the meet. The Eagles return to action Saturday, April 24 as the squad will compete in both the Irwin Belk Invitational in Davidson, N.C. and the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, N.C.
