Men's Tennis 3/17/2004 1:53:00 AM Southern Conference SoCon Men's Tennis Results, Tuesday, March 16 Southern Mississippi 5, The Citadel 2 Charleston, SC - The Citadel fell short to Southern Mississippi, 2-5, in tennis action this afternoon at Donald C. Bunch Tennis Courts on the campus of The Citadel. "We played well despite the loss," remarked head coach Toby Simpson. "Southern Mississippi is a solid program and I hope we learned a few things that will allow us to elevate our play." In No. 1 singles, Citadel senior Matt Stubbs fell to junior David Canudas, 7-6, 6-3. Senior John Williams defeated Southern Mississippi's freshman Juan Garzon at No. 2 singles, in two sets, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Carl Hocker in No. 3 singles, fell to Golden Eagle freshman Chris Rea, 6-2, 6-1, while the No. 4 match-up added another win for Southern Mississippi, as sophomore Reid Bourgeois defeated sophomore Warren Woolfolk, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. Sophomore David Lara earned the second and final point for The Citadel (9-6, 5-0 SoCon) as he handled freshman Thomas Funke, 7-6, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot. The Golden Eagles clenched the fifth and final point as freshman Dylan Mezey beat freshman Robert Haynie, 6-4, 6-0. In the No. 1 doubles The Citadel's sophomore duo of Woolfolk and Lara came up one shy against Canudas and Mezey, 9-8. In the No. 2 doubles Stubbs and Hocker overcome Southern Mississippi's Garzon and Funke, 8-0, while Golden Eagles Rea and Bourgeois overcame Lara and Haynie, 8-6, in the No. 3 spot.
