Wildcat Volleyball Announces 2004 Schedule

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson head coach Tim Cowie recently announced the 2004 fall volleyball schedule which includes a trip to Arizona, the annual Mizuno Wildcat Classic and a full slate of Southern Conference competition.

The Wildcats begin the season with an alumni match on Aug. 28 before welcoming Winthrop to Belk Arena in the season opener on Sept. 1. Davidson then plays host to Virginia Commonwealth, Florida Atlantic and DePaul in the Mizuno Wildcat Classic on Sept. 3-4.

One weekend later, Davidson travels to Arizona to participate in the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl Tournament. Scheduled to compete in the two-day tournament are Akron, UC-Riverside, Rider and host Northern Arizona. The Wildcats are slated in play in the Liberty Invitational as well. Big South regular season champ Liberty, William & Mary and Tennessee Tech are the other teams listed to participate on Sept. 17-18.

Other noteworthy non-conference matches include home tilts against cross-county rival Charlotte (Sept. 14) and Memphis (Sept. 22), which finished 30-6 in 2003. The Wildcats also take on ACC-foe North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Oct. 26.

League competition begins the weekend of Sept. 24-25 with home matches against The Citadel and College of Charleston. The Cougars had a 29-match conference winning streak broken towards the end of last season. Davidson will spend most of the month of October on the road as eight of its 10 SoCon matches are away from home.

The Wildcats wind down the regular season with home matches against defending league champion Georgia Southern, Furman and Wofford at the beginning of November. The 2004 SoCon Tournament will be hosted by Western Carolina from Nov. 19-21. Davidson won the last conference tourney in Cullowhee, N.C., back in 1999.

"We're excited about the 2004 schedule as we will play teams from 11 different states," said Cowie. "It's a diverse schedule which has us playing teams from coast to coast, yet maintaining traditional non-conference matches with North Carolina and Charlotte. We're also excited about adding additional teams from our own North Carolina backyard which hopefully will build new rivalries."

Davidson finished the 2003 campaign with an overall record of 14-21 and 7-11 in the South Division of the Southern Conference. 2004 DAVIDSON VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE
