The Citadel 6, Mercer 1

Charleston, SC - The Citadel (1-3) tennis team captured their first win of the 2004 season, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon, February 8, at Earle Tennis Center on The Citadel campus. The Bulldogs earned the doubles point after sweeping the event and took all but one singles point.

"It's great to get our first win against a tough opponent like Mercer," remarked head coach Toby Simpson. "Our guys rebounded after a tough loss (to South Carolina State) and played tough and hard. I am extremely proud of our team and hope we can build on this."

In singles action, The Citadel's Matt Stubbs outplayed Mercer's Manie Gil, 6-3, 6-0, in the number one match. The number two paring resulted in The Citadel's John Williams overcoming Mercer's Rick Echeverri, 6-2, 6-2, while David Lara fell to Mercer's Anjer Vaferei, 6-3, 7-5, at three singles. Warren Woolfolk (The Citadel) beat Jason Glow of Mercer, 6-2, 6-0 in the number four spot. The Citadel's Carol Hocker defeated Patrick Russo of Mercer in a close match, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 in the number five slot. At number six singles, Rob Haynie of The Citadel overpowered Mercer's Nathan Starr, 6-2, 6-1.

The Citadel seized all three doubles match-ups as Woolfolk and Lara handled Gil and Vaferei, 8-6, at number one, Hocker and Stubbs defeated Echeverri and Glow at number two doubles, 8-3, and the number three team of Haynie and Williams outplayed Starr and Russo, 8-2.

Yale 6, Elon 1

ELON, N.C. - Yale spoiled Elon's season opener Saturday, hanging a 6-1 non-conference men's tennis loss on the Phoenix at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs (1-1) captured five of the six singles matches - receiving victories from Ryan Murphy (6-1, 4-6, 6-0 over Pramote Malasitt at No. 1), Brandon Wai (6-3, 7-5 over Eric Haase at No. 2), Rowan Reynolds (4-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Thomas Rohof at No. 3), Milosz Gudzowski (6-0, 6-1 over Justin Roberson at No. 4) and Neil Tolaney (1-6, 6-2, 7-6 over Mike Prelec at No. 6).

The Phoenix (0-1) earned a singles victory at No. 5, where Sebastian Bredberg outlasted Johnny Lu 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. Yale claimed two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point, thanks to wins at No. 2 (Reynolds and Andrew Rosenfeld over Rohof and Roberson 9-7) and No. 3 (Tolaney and Chris Lawler over Bredberg and Prelec 8-2).

Malasitt and Haase doubled up Murphy and Wai 8-4 to give the Phoenix a victory at No. 1 doubles. Elon returns to action when it plays its first Southern Conference match at the College of Charleston at 1 p.m. next Saturday. The Bulldogs won't play again until they host Army at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.

American 6, UNCG 1

Washington, DC - The UNC Greensboro men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to American Sunday morning in the nation's capital.

UNCG picked up a victory at the No. 1 doubles match as Pieter Visser and Julio Moran posted an 8-6 win over Tushar Garg and Andreas Kulscar. American then claimed victories in the next two doubles matches to take the point.

American's Guillaume Tarralle defeated Julio Moran in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. UNCG's Greg Levin then picked up a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Tushar Garg at No. 2. In the third spot, the Eagles' Juancarlo Vazquez posted a 6-2, 6-4, win over Marc Ladouceur. At No. 4, Andreas Kulscar knocked off Pieter Visser, 7-6, 6-1, while Jonah Fliegelman defeated Chris Magnone, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5. In the final spot, American's Sebastian Proisy defeated Jason Steinhorn, 6-4, 6-0.

UNCG will be back in action again on Sunday, February 15. The Spartans host Charleston Southern at 10 am, then turn right back around and host cross-town rival North Carolina A&T at 4 pm.
