Davidson Downs Citadel

Charleston, SC - Sophomore guard Brendan Winters scored 18 points and gathered eight rebounds to help Davidson to their first road victory of the season and a victory over The Citadel, 67-49, in Southern Conference basketball action Tuesday evening in McAlister Field House.

"It is a terrific feeling to win our first game on the road," Davidson head coach Bob McKillop stated. "It is always a battle against The Citadel and they are very well coached. Matt (McKillop) hit some big threes down the stretch and our defense in the post was outstanding tonight."

Davidson (10-11, 5-5 SoCon) jumped all over the Bulldogs and never looked back as the Wildcats opened the game with a 17-3 run. Three three-pointers from the hot-shooting duo of McKillop and Winters highlighted the run.

The Citadel (4-16, 0-9 SoCon) rallied right back and closed the gap to 24-21 as the Bulldogs went on an 18-7 run of their own. The run ended at 8:39 as senior guard Erick Wilson nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key.

Davidson finished the half on a positive note and pushed their half-time lead to 38-28 going into the intermission. Both teams struggled early in the second half as the first points of the half did not come until 16:15 in the period as Winters rained a three-pointer on the scoring drought to push the lead to 41-28. The Wildcats extended their lead to as many as 20 points on three occasions and held the Bulldogs off to secure the victory.

"Davidson out-toughed us tonight as they posted 22 more rebounds than us," Citadel head coach Pat Dennis stated. "The Wildcats have very good shooters and are fundamentally sound on both ends of the court."

Joining Winters in double figures for Davidson were McKillop with 15 and junior forward Logan Kosmalski who added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Ian Johnson also added nine points and nine rebounds.

Wilson who scored 18 points and connected on five three-pointers led the Citadel offensively. Freshman forward J'mel Everhart posted eight rebounds marking the 11th time this season he led the team in that category.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, February 7th as they take on Wofford at 2 pm in McAlister Field House, while Davidson returns home to take on the College of Charleston at 7:00 pm in the Belk Arena
