Wofford 6, Gardner-Webb 1

The Wofford men's tennis team continued its best start since the
program moved to the Division I ranks in 1995-96 with a 6-1 defeat at
Gardner-Webb Wednesday afternoon.

The Terriers started the action by sweeping the doubles matches
to garner the point. At the No. 1 doubles slot, Kent Ball and Brett
Johnson defeated Phil Skelton and Mike Osborne, 8-3. Also garnering an
8-3 win were Chris Barlow and Brandon Smith at the No. 2 position as
they defeated Roberto Vasques and Bryan Edmonds. The duo of Jason Mengel
and Alex Fridzon concluded the doubles matches with an 8-5 triumph over
Kim Ellis and Andrew Conley at the No. 3 seed.

In singles play, Wofford knocked off the Bulldogs in five of the
six matches. Ball, the January Southern Conference Men's Tennis Athlete
of the Month, continued his undefeated streak with a 6-4, 6-4, win over
Skelton at the No. 1 position. Fridzon posted a 6-3, 6-3, win over
Vasques at the No. 2 slot.

During the No. 3 singles match, Barlow registered a 6-2, 6-3
triumph over Edmonds while Johnson defeated Osborne, 6-1, 7-6, at the
No. 4 position. Alec Wilson tallied the last singles point for the
Terriers with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Daniel Abrahao at the No. 6 slot.

"It was a nice win for us today," said head coach Rod Ray.
"Gardner-Webb played hard, but we were definitely glad to get back on
the court."

With the victory, Wofford improves to 4-0 on the season. The
Terriers will return to the court Friday when they return to the Reeves
Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. match against High Point.
