Three Southern Conference student-athletes in men's soccer have been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District III University Team. The trio includes Tommy Kandl of Wofford and Josh Chatraw and Tommy Irwin of Georgia Southern.
Members of CoSIDA nominated student-athletes from their respective schools to their district coordinators, which in turn were voted upon by other CoSIDA members in the district. Eligibility requirements included at least sophomore standing, a 3.20 grade-point average and either starter or important reserve status in the sport in which they are nominated.
Kandl, who is serving as the Terriers' captain this fall, carries a 3.93 grade-point average as a biology major through the summer sessions. In his career, he has started 53-of-67 games in which he has played and has tallied one assist. His lone point came in Wofford's victory over Southern Conference foe Elon, Nov. 1, 2003. He also has 18 career shots.
"I'm really excited for Tommy, the program and the school for this well-deserved honor," said head coach Matt Kern. "He is an outstanding student and a very good soccer player which makes him the epitomy of a true student-athlete. His commitment to excellence in the classroom, on the soccer field and in off-field activities is as good as I've ever seen."
Each member of the all-district squad will represent District III on the national ballot. District III is comprised of member institutions in a five-state region, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Florida.
Kandl and the rest of the Terriers will close their regular season at 11 a.m. Saturday with a contest at VMI in Lexington, Va. Wofford will then play Tuesday versus UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C., in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
