Cougars announce 2005 baseball schedule

Charleston, S.C. - Fresh off a record setting campaign last spring where the College of Charleston posted a 47-16 record, the Cougars' 2005 schedule includes 15 games against NCAA Regional participants from 2004 and 33 home games at Patriots Point Field.

The Cougars begin the season with 13 consecutive home games, including the first six against a pair of NCAA teams. Charleston opens the season with three games against NCAA Super Regional participant East Carolina at Patriots Point, Feb. 11-13. Charleston plays host to Army in a three-game set Feb. 18-20. Charleston won a 2-1 decision over the Black Knights last spring in the LSU Regional.

"This is a very tough and exciting schedule that the Cougars will face this year," said CofC coach John Pawlowski, whose team finished last season ranked 29th nationally by Collegiate Baseball magazine. "With 15 games versus teams that were either in the NCAA Super Regionals or Regionals last year, it will certainly be a challenge.

"With the returnees from last year's team and 18 new faces on the roster we look forward to continuing to build a tradition here at College of Charleston. My assistant coaches have done a tremendous job of evaluating talent and continue to bring in quality student-athletes to our program."

In Southern Conference action Charleston plays host to Western Carolina, Appalachian State, Davidson, Furman and UNC Greensboro. The Cougars will travel to league foes Elon, Wofford, The Citadel, East Tennessee State and Georgia Southern.

The Cougars' non-conference home slate includes the 2005 Charleston Challenge where they take on Towson, LeMoyne and Maryland in the three-day event. The Cougars also host Lipscomb, Winthrop, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, The Citadel and Mercer. Charleston will play eight non-SoCon tilts on the road. The Cougars play single games at North Carolina, Clemson, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Winthrop and a three-game series at Georgia State, April 8-10.

The Southern Conference Tournament is in Charleston at Joe Riley Park, May 25-28.

Charleston claimed its first Southern Conference championship in 2004 after posting a 25-5 league record. The Cougars' overall win and league victory totals were Southern Conference records. The Cougars finished second at the LSU Regional after posting wins over Army and Southern Mississippi.
