Men's Tennis 9/29/2003 12:23:00 PM Southern Conference Wofford's Johnson Keys Strong Men's Tennis Effort in Chattanooga Junior Brett Johnson captured the A Flight singles tournament to lead the Wofford men's tennis team in action this weekend at the UTCBaras Fall Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. Johnson defeated UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski in the championship, 6-1, 6-3.Johnson was not the only Terrier to reach the quarterfinals of the A singles, as teammate Brandon Smith fell in the round of eight by a6-3, 6-3 score to No. 1 seed David Canudas of Southern Miss. Also in A singles play, freshman Alex Fridzon dropped his opening round match toMitrovski, 7-5, 6-3.In the B singles bracket, sophomore Chris Barlow reached the quarters before falling to Southern Miss's Reid Bourgeois, 6-4, 6-4. Alec Wilson dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Birmingham-Southern's David Ray in the round of 16, while senior Jason Mengel lost his opening roundmatch, 6-2, 6-2, to Mike Sherman of Lipscomb. Jeff Muthig gave the Terriers another participant in the rounf of 16, as he lost 6-0, 6-3, to Christopher Rea of Southern Miss. Muthigtook the loss and advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket before losing a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (3) decision to Thomas Funke of SouthernMiss. Hunter Strasberger registered a 6-2, 7-6, decision to host Chattanooga's Joshua Bales. In A doubles play, the Johnson/Mengel duo reached the quarterfinals before falling to Felipe Abreu/Felipe Lima of Belmont,8-5. Fridzon/Smith teammed together in a second doubles pairing for Wofford and fell 9-8 in their opening round match versus UT-Martin's GusAnzola/Olti Mollaymeri. The duo of Barlow/Wilson received a bye into the round 16 in the B doubles bracket, but dropped an 8-4 decision to Coastal Carolina'sAndy Caress/Simon Taylor.
