Lady Paladin Cross Country Wins Third Straight Race at Winthrop Invitational, Furman Men Finish Third

Rock Hill, South Carolina -- The Furman women's cross country team placed four runners in the top ten as the Lady Paladins captured the Country Inn & Suites Winthrop Invitational 5K race Saturday morning in Rock Hill, S.C. The Furman men placed finished third in their 8K event.

Whitney Sharp (6th), Molly Mungovan (7th), Carly Smith (8th) and Tessa Cook (10th) recorded top ten results to lead Furman to its third straight first place finish of the season. The Lady Paladins opened 2003 by winning the Milliken Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C., and the Davidson Open in Davidson, N.C.

Appalachian State and Winthrop followed Furman with second and third place finishes, respectively, while Sylvia Chelimo of Gardner Webb captured individual medalist honors in the women's 5K.

In the men's race, Furman's one-two punch of senior Kevin Crosby and sophomore Tyler Johnson once again proved effective as Crosby finished third and Johnson fifth to pace the Paladins to a third place showing. High Point claimed the 8K event led by first place finisher Jeff Fairman. Appalachian State placed second with three runners in the top ten.

WCU Women's Cross Country Finishes First; Men Place Second at UTC Invitational
Caleb Bailey finishes as men's individual champion in 5K

Chattanooga, Tenn. - The Western Carolina men's and women's cross country teams competed at the UTC Frontrunner Challenge Saturday and the women came out victorious, taking home the title with only 25 points, edging the host school by six points. The WCU men finished second with 38 points behind UTC with 27.

In the men's 5K race, Catamount Caleb Bailey finished as the individual champion, turning in a time of 14:58. Adam Puett came in sixth overall with a time of 15:35, Ben Watkins finished eighth at 16:01 and James Irwin came in 11th with a time of 16:22. Rounding out the WCU top five was Chris Lynch in 12th place at 16:40.

For the women's two mile race, Melanie Cooper led the Cats, coming in third with a time of 11:46. Deanna Kulesz finished fifth at 12:09, Alyssa Short came in sixth at 12:13 and Tonya Edmonds finished seventh overall with a time of 12:17. Rounding out the top five WCU women was Jerrine Peeler, coming in 10th with a time of 12:28.

Lady Terriers Run to Sixth Place Result Saturday Morning

The Wofford Lady Terrier cross country team finished sixth out of seven Division I schools at the Country Inn & Suites/Winthrop Invitational Saturday morning in Rock Hill, S.C.

For the second straight meet, Ashley Adamson posted the Lady Terriers' top time with a 49th place effort of 21:42.26, while teammate Katherine Lister was one place behind in 50th with a time of 22:09.19.

Other scorers for Wofford were the trio of Corey Wilson (22:51.72), Nichole Dahlin (23:08.18) and Amanda Mills (23:32.77), who finished in 55th, 56th and 57th places, respectively.

Holly Smith (60th-25:15.47) and Stacey Horton (61st-25:45.94) also provided additional support.

The Lady Terriers will be back in action Oct. 3 at the Gardner-Webb Invitational.

Wofford Men's Cross Country Finishes Seventh in Rock Hill, S.C.

At the Country Inn & Suites/Winthrop Invitational Saturday morning, the Wofford men's cross country team finished seventh out of seven Division I schools with a team score of 183.

Andrew Powell led the Terriers with a 47th place time of 28:39.47, while Andre Caldwell finished 51st at 29:19.78. Also scoring for Wofford were Ben Pauli (54th-29:51.88), John Cheeks (56th-31:13.52) and Chris Shugart (62nd-33:20.01).

Matthew Rusk (63rd-34:40.50) and Greg Clark (66th-36:00.16) also ran for the Terriers.

Wofford will continue its fall season in two weeks, Oct. 3, at the Gardner-Webb Invitational.
