Furman 2, Georgia Southern 1

STATESBORO, Ga. Kat Kelly scored the winning goal with 12:19 remaining to propel Furman to a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern in Southern Conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Eagle Field.

Kelly's goal came as the two teams battled for control of the ball in front of the Eagle net. Paladin Danielle Petro eventually won the ball and passed to Kelly at the top of the box. Kelly's shot sailed over the hand of Eagle keeper Tanya Woehr, off the bottom of the crossbar and just into the goal to break a 1-1 tie at the 77:41 mark.

Furman (4-4-0, 2-0-0) opened the scoring in the 57th minute after again gaining control of a loose ball in front of the Eagle goal. Stacy Simpson collected the ball at the top of the box and passed to the right side where Andre'a Morrison sent a shot into the right-hand corner for a 1-0 Paladin lead.

The match was evened at 1-1 moments later as Georgia Southern (2-4-0, 0-1-0) turned up the offensive pressure. Colleen Znosko took a pass from Katie Szeghalmi and streaked down the right side before attempting a cross back to Szeghalmi. The pass sailed over Szeghalmi's head, but the Paladin defense was unable to clear the ball as it bounced off Paladin Kate Johnson and trickled past Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw for an own goal at 69:39.

Furman owned a 16-5 advantage in shots on the day, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Woehr made five saves for the Eagles while Hinshaw made
three for the Paladins. Corner kicks were 8-1 in favor of Furman while fouls were even at 6-6.

Mercer 1, Wofford 0

The Wofford women's soccer team surrendered a goal and lost its first match since the season opener as it dropped a 1-0 decision at Mercer Thursday evening. With the loss, the Lady Terriers drop to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Bears improve to 3-3.

Just 4:48 into the match, Mercer's Darcy Kibler slid a pass from Rachel Astorino past Wofford goalkeeper Austin Somers for the match's only tally. The goal snaps the school record scoreless streak by Somers, which stands at 367:25.

Junior Christine Pezzutti and freshman Bernie Sikes led all players with two shots a piece, as the Lady Terriers outshot the Bears, 6-4, including holding Mercer shotless in the second half.

"We played well tonight, but didn't get the result we wanted," said head coach Amy Kiah. "The team really played well defensively, especially in the second half, but offensively we couldn't get the shot that counted. I'm proud of how this team stuck together despite allowing the early goal; it showed a lot of class."

The Lady Terriers will next play in-state rival South Carolina Wednesday evening. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Snyder Field.
