Volleyball 9/18/2003 3:57:00 AM Southern Conference SoCon Volleyball Results, Sept. 17 Chattanooga 3, East Tennessee State 0CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Kari Krouse pounded 15 kills and hit .464 at the net as the Lady Mocs volleyball team opened the Southern Conference portion of their schedule with a three-game sweep (30-21, 30-23, 30-27) of East Tennessee State Wednesday night at Maclellan Gym.The Lady Mocs (5-7 overall, 1-0 SoCon) hit .281 as a team. Sophomore Lindsey Galloway hit .348 with 10 kills and nine digs. Amanda Durfee picked up 15 digs and two aces, while Dominique Mayor had 14 digs. Kelley Smith had three solo blocks.ETSU (1-9, 0-1) led by five points about midway through the first and third games, but Chattanooga roared back each time. In the opening game, Krouse had six kills and Durfee her two aces to lead the charge. In the second game, UTC pulled away late as Krouse had six more kills and Galloway picked up five. The Buccaneers would not go away in the third game, but three kills from setter Emily McGinnis and four by Jody Steinberger helped UTC put it away.McGinnis played the entire game at setter and finished with a season-best 38 assists, eight digs and a service ace.The Bucs were led by Kelsey Sherich with 10 kills, while Lissa Allen had nine and Jennifer Sartor eight. Karen Freeburg had 16 digs to lead the defense, while Kristi Robinson picked up 36 assists.Chattanooga is off for about a week until it hits the road Sept. 25 to play Western Carolina. ETSU plays at the Clemson tournament this weekend.Furman 3, Wofford 2The Wofford Lady Terrier volleyball program fought hard to take games two and four, but it was not enough as the Furman Lady Paladins prevailed with a five game victory in volleyball action Wednesday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Furman garnered the win by winning every other game, 30-28, 26-30, 30-25, 19-30, 15-10.Continuing her dominance as the leading offensive threat for Wofford was junior outside hitter Andrea Duke, who finished with team highs of 22 kills, 59 total attacks, four service aces and 26.5 points. Sophomore Katie Sobczyk also posted double figures in kills (10), total attacks (22) and points (12.0). Sophomore Angela Berry (13.0) and junior Katie Laser (11.5) also posted double digit totals for points.Sophomore Julia Fredrickson was the leading Lady Paladin, as she registered 12 kills and 15.0 points, while freshman Whitney Purser recorded 36 total attacks and 10.5 points, while fellow freshman Ally Hock garnered 11 kills, 26 total attacks and 14.0 points.With the loss, the Lady Terriers fall to 3-5, 0-1 in the Southern Conference, while Furman improves to 5-6, 1-0 in league play.Wofford will next play in the Birmingham-Southern Tournament this weekend in Birmingham, Ala. The Lady Terriers are scheduled to play four games in two days, including the first game Friday morning against South Alabama. Furman will play Rutgers on Friday evening at the UGA Invitational in Athens, GA.
