Men's Soccer 9/18/2003 3:29:00 AM Southern Conference SoCon Men's Soccer Results, September 17, 2003 Gardner-Webb 3, Elon 2 (2OTs)ELON, NC -- Carlitos Ramirez scored in the 108th minute to lift Gardner-Webb (2-2-0) to a 3-2 double overtime victory over Elon (1-4-1) in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The score came off assists from Sergio Lozano and Brian Young. The Phoenix, playing its second consecutive double overtime contest, took an early 1-0 lead when Brennan Farrell scored his second goal of the season on a header off of a pass from Eric Sass who settled Anthony Catalano's cross. Farrell's tally came in the 11th minute. Gardner-Webb would tie the game later in the first stanza when Ramirez scored an unassisted marker for his first goal of the season in the 37th minute. The rest of the first half would remain scoreless and the two teams headed into the break dead even. The first half saw Elon out-shoot Gardner-Webb 7-3 and only one of the three shots taken by the Runnin' Bulldogs was on goal. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead on an unassisted Brian Wentzel goal. Wentzel scored after intercepting an Elon goal kick. In the 85th minute Elon's Paul Bellacqua (pictured right) found the back of the net when he put home Blake Gaiser's corner to tie the game at two apiece. The two teams headed into the first overtime period knotted at two and ended it the same way. The game looked destined to finish in a 2-2 tie, but Ramirez had other ideas, scoring the game-winner at 107:17. Elon tallied 20 total shots to 17 for Gardner-Webb, but shots on goal were even at seven at the end of the game. The Phoenix recorded 11 corner kicks to only three for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Taylor Saxe went the distance in net for Elon, recording four saves. Tyler Kettering made five saves for Gardner-Webb in his 107:17 in goal. Wofford 2, Birmingham Southern 4The Wofford men's soccer team fell to host Birmingham-Southern Wednesdayevening, 4-2, at BSC Soccer Park.The Terriers put the first tally on the scoreboard at the 28:30 markwhen senior Sam Moore scored his second goal in as many games off aheader and assists from freshman Joel Kozak and junior JesusArroyo-Peco. At the half, Wofford held the 1-0 margin.In the second half, the Panthers then rallied to score four unansweredgoals, including two within two minutes at 54:46 and 56:36.
