Chattanooga Names All-Century Football Team

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---Twelve All-Americas highlight the Chattanooga Times
Free Press UC/UTC All-Century Football Team, which was announced Friday by
the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the city's award-winning
newspaper.

The team was selected by a panel from fans' nominations over the summer and
is part of UTC's Century of Chattanooga Football season-long
celebration. The All-Century Team members will be introduced and honored
Friday night at the Century of Chattanooga Football Gala.

The defensive selections include six All-Americas, linemen Jack Gregory Sr.
(1937-39) and Bob Klein (1933-35), linebackers Josh Cain (1999-2002),
Junior Jackson (1986-89) and Charles Long (1957-60) and defensive back Dick
Young (1952-53). All-Americas selected to the offensive team include
quarterback Chris Sanders (1999-2000), receiver Cos DeMatteo (1999-2001),
running back Gene Roberts (1946) and linemen Joe Kopcha (1927-29) and
Chester Lagod (1949-52). All-America Matt Vick was voted as the All-Time
Team's place kicker.

"I don't envy the group who had to whittle down the nominations to pick
this All-Century Team," UTC Athletics Director Steve Sloan said. "There
have been some tremendous players here over the last 100 years, and I know
they had a difficult time narrowing down this list to pick an offense, a
defense and special teams. We are proud that so many of them are coming
back to be with us for this special weekend."

Kopcha is the oldest member of the squad. Klein, of Signal Mountain,
Tenn., is the oldest living member at 91 years of age.

Brent Adams (1971-74), Curtis Rouse (1979-81) and Garfield Wells (1975-77)
round out the offensive line. NFL All-Pro receiver Terrell Owens (1993-95)
joins Rocky Turner (1968-71) and DeMatteo at the wideout positions.

UTC's career rushing leader, Gwain Durden (1978-80) is paired with Roberts
in the backfield. Sanders, who set nearly every school passing record
during his two years at the school, is the quarterback.

Joining Gregory and Klein on the defensive line are Jabob Burney (1978-80),
John Creager (1977-79) and Randall "Brick" Mitchell (1982-85). The
school's all-time leading tackler, Glen Richardson (1982-85) heads the
linebacker corps which includes, Cain, Jackson and Charlie Long (1957-60).

Young's defensive backfield mates are Mike Hunt (1979-81) and David McCrary
(1983-85).

Greg Cater (1977-79) was a three-time All-Southern Conference performer and
earned the All-Century Team punter distinction. Matt Vick (1997-2000) led
the nation in field goals in 2000, and Tony Ball (1978-80) averaged 37.7
yards per kick return in 1977.

Two head coaches were selected. Scrappy Moore (1931-67) is a member of the
College Football Hall of Fame and was National College Division Coach of
the Year in 1967. Joe Morrison led the Mocs to SoCon Championships in
1977, 1978 and 1979. He was named SoCon Coach of the Year two times.
