Elon 1, UNC Asheville 3

ELON, NC -- UNC Asheville tallied two second half goals to break open a 1-1 game and defeat Elon in men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Bulldogs advance their record to 2-1-0, while the Phoenix drops to 1-3-0 on the season.

The scoring began early in the game as each team found the back of the net in the first 13 minutes of the contest. UNC Asheville's Mike Kachan scored his second goal of the season in the 10th minute to put the Bulldogs ahead. Greg Yelverton notched the assist on Kachan's score.

Elon's Paul Bellacqua (right) knotted the game at one when he settled a Brent McDowell pass and scored in the 13th minute. Bellacqua's goal was his first of the season. The rest of the first half would remain scoreless despite the combined 13 shots taken.

The second half began as the first had ended and a defensive struggle seemed to be looming until Barrett Locke scored for the first time this year off a Yelverton pass at 61:25. The Bulldogs added an insurance marker in the 69th minute when Greg Garrison scored off a Kachan pass.

Elon played the final 27:19 a man down as Tim Sullivan picked up his second yellow card on the afternoon. The two teams combined for 35 fouls in the very physical game.

Overall, Elon outshot UNCA by a 14-10 margin, but the two teams each recorded six shots on goal.

Ben Saylor went the distance in net for UNCA, grabbing five saves. For Elon, Kyle Ostendorf allowed the first goal before being pulled for Taylor Saxe. Saxe logged 73:29 in goal, making three saves and allowing two scores.

The Phoenix will head to Southern Conference foe Furman for its next contest on Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in Greenville, SC.


Wofford 0, High Point 1

Spartanburg -- Richard Hanson scored just inside the 6-yard box off an assist by Michael Sullivan at the 73:51 mark to give High Point a 1-0 men's soccer victory over Wofford tonight at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

Goalkeepers Matt Long and Chris Michener each played a half to share in
the shutout as the Panthers improved to 1-2 on the year. The Terriers
drop to 0-5.

High Point outshot Wofford by a 15-11 margin. The shots were 8-8 in the
second half. Freshman midfielder Brandon Lowery totaled a team-high five
shots for the Terriers, who return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m.
match at Liberty.

Philip Trotter had four saves in goal for Wofford.
