Women's Cross Country 9/1/2003 5:02:00 AM Southern Conference SoCon Cross Country Results for September 1: weekend edition Coastal Carolina Sweeps Cross Country Honors; CofC Women Place Second - 8/29/03Charleston, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina swept the men's and women's team and individual titles at the 2003 Roly Poly/College of Charleston Invitational Cross Country Meet held at Dixie Plantation on Friday. The College of Charleston women finished second, while the Cougar men placed fourth. Terah Kipchiris and Kim Nemergut of Coastal Carolina captured the men's and women's individual honors. Kipchiris won the 5K event with a time of 15:37.60, while teammate Nelson Oliveria finished second with a time of 16:09.40. Robert Killian's time of 16:23.10 placed third. Nemergut won women's event running the two-mile course in 11:29.30. Teammates Lindsay Kozlowski and Eileen Wicker finished second and third with times of 11:45.90 and 11:57.90, respectively. The College of Charleston's top women's finisher was Kyle Palmquist who placed seventh with a time of 12:28.70. Charleston's top men's runner was Ben Phillips who placed fourth with a time of 16:29.60.Davidson Cross Country Begins Season at Mountaineer OpenBoone, N.C. - Running in her first ever collegiate race, junior Kelly Fillnow had the top time for the Davidson women's cross country team at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C. Fillnow, also a top tennis player for the 'Cats, finished in 10th place overall with a time of 18:51. Junior Sally Stanhope recorded the second-best Wildcat time, running the 5,000-meter course at State Farm Field in a time of 19:36 to finish fifteenth among the runners. Senior Jenna Kruppa also finished in the top half of the pack with her time of 19:51.On the men's side, sophomore Jonathan Baker placed sixteenth with his time of 16:11. Senior Chris Schmader was right on his heels, crossing the finish line at 16:12. Senior Greg Scott's time of 16:24 was also good for a top 20 finish.In this the first cross country event of the year, Florida State claimed the men's title while Wake Forest's women earned three of the top four finishing places to take home the crown. The Davidson women head to Gainesville, Fla., for the Gator Invitation on Saturday, Sept. 6. The men have a week off before hosting the Davidson Open on Sept. 13. ETSU Men's Cross Country Takes First at Campbell Early Bird ClassicBUIES CREEK, N.C. (August 30, 2003) - The East Tennessee State University men's and women's cross country teams began the 2003 season at the Campbell Early Bird Classic hosted by Campbell University on Saturday. ETSU won the men's field in the 5K race, placing five runners in the top-ten spots. Junior Bradley Yewer (Newbury, England) finished first for the Buccaneers with a time of 15:46.55 and took second place overall. Sophomore Peter Dalton (Dublin, Ireland) had one of his best overall starts and finished second on the team with a time of 15:51.64 and third overall."This is a good solid start for the squad this year," commented head coach David E. Walker. "We have good depth and my expectation is for us to continue to improve." In the women's 4K race, senior Emily Chaney (Maryville, Tenn.) finished first with a time of 15:31.15 and an overall fourth-place finish. Teammates Katie Marshall (Metuchen, N.J.) and Christine Ward (Candler, N.C.) also ran well and placed 14th and 16th, respectively. "I was very impressed by our team and the solid outing at today's meet," said assistant coach Michelle Byrne. "Emily had a solid race today and will only improve as the season progresses. Christine showed a lot of improvement and that she is willing to put in the required work and step up on the team."The Buccaneer cross country team will travel to Davidson, N.C. to compete in the Pre-Conference Invitational on September 13.
