Three SoCon Players Earn Freshman All-America Honors

TUCSON, Ariz. - The 2003 Louisville Slugger Freshmen
All-American team features a who's who of tremendous
baseball talent.

The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball newspaper's
Freshmen National Players of The Year in LHP Mark Romanczuk
(Stanford), LHP Glen Perkins (Minnesota), Jeff Clement
(Southern California), and multiple position athlete Stephen
Head (Mississippi).

Three Southern Conference players were honored including VMI third baseman Kelly Sweppenhiser, UNC Greensboro reliever Chris Mason and Georgia Southern hurler John Carroll.

* RHP John Carroll, Georgia Southern - Carroll posted a 7-2
record with a 3.75 ERA. He fanned 101 batters and walked
only 20 in 89 2/3 innings.

* Chris Mason, N.C. Greensboro - Posted 8 saves and had a
4.39 ERA with 51 strikeouts and 10 walks.

* Kelly Sweppenhiser, Virginia Military Institute - The
Freshman of The Year in the Southern Conference hit .318
with 3 homers and 25 RBI.
