Men's Outdoor Track and Field 5/12/2003 9:12:00 AM Southern Conference SoCon Athletes Compete At Clemson WoffordCLEMSON, S.C. -- Sophomore Adrien Borders improved upon his ownschool records in the long jump and triple jump at Saturday's Orange andPurple Classic at Clemson. Borders finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 50feet, six inches (15.39 meters) while going sixth in the long jump at 24feet, 3 1/2 inches (7.41 meters). He also had a personal best time inthe 100 meter dash at 10.83 seconds. Freshmen Katon Bethay and Alex Love also finished well for theTerriers. Bethay placed 10th in the shot put with a distance of 15.61meters and 19th in the discus throw (41.64 meters). Love was 16th in the110 meter high hurdles with a time of 15.38 seconds. Borders has already qualified for NCAA regional competition inboth the long jump and the triple jump, which will take place at GeorgeMason University at the end of May.Western CarolinaClemson, S.C. - A few members of the Western Carolina track and field team competed at the annual Clemson Relays over the weekend in preparation for the upcoming NCAA Regionals in Fairfax, Va., on May 30. Southern Conference javelin champion Josh Lee not only improved his regional qualifying mark in the event at Clemson, he also broke the WCU outdoor record by nearly five feet. The freshman threw 193'8" to place fourth at the Relays.WCU pole vaulters Laura Tieszen and Michelle Velez took first and second place, respectively, at their event with both vaulting 12'6". Tieszen had already qualified in the event with her record-setting height of 12'10". Velez improved her mark by six inches.The Catamounts will compete in one more meet, the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 16, before heading to Fairfax for the NCAA Regional competition.
