Baseball 3/6/2003 8:33:00 AM Southern Conference UNC Greensboro Cracks Top 25 Poll GREENSBORO, NC - One of the hottest teams in the entire country, the UNCG baseball team broke the top-25 for the first time in school history March 3. The Spartans are 25th in both Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Baseball America.UNCG has won eleven consecutive games to open the 2003 campaign; only Arizona State has a current longer winning streak in the country. The Sun Devils have won 15 straight. The 11-0 start is the best in school history. The previous mark was 5-0; set during the 1997 campaign.UNCG just wrapped up a three-game series sweep of LeMoyne College. The Spartans rallied past the Dolphins in all three contests. LeMoyne was picked second in the Preseason MAAC Coaches Poll.UNCG mixed the continued hot hitting of All-American Candidates Jason Sarvis and Ryan Gordon with the dominating starting pitching from All-American Scooter Michael.Sarvis batted .556 in the series with two runs scored and two RBI. The senior leads the Spartans in batting average (.513), hits (20), runs scored (18), doubles (3), RBI (16) and on-base percentage (.636).Gordon hit .500 in the series with two runs scored, two RBI and a game-winning steal of home in Monday night's series finale. The junior also tossed 6.1 innings in a no-decision in the opener of the series. The southpaw scattered seven hits, while fanning four and walking one.Michael tossed his first complete game of the season and fifth of his career in the victory in game-two. The right-hander scattered seven hits over nine innings. Michael tossed 102 pitches, 74 of which were for strikes. The junior also struck out five and walked none. Michael has now fanned 19 this season, while walking just a pair.UNCG was the only Southern Conference school among the top-25. The Spartans were also 36th in Sports Weekly/ESPN College Coaches Poll.UNCG returns to action this Wednesday afternoon with Albany. First-pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
