VMI's Britt and Erwin Both Go 1-1 at NCAA Wrestling Championships

Kansas City, Mo. -- VMI wrestlers Matt Erwin (South Vienna, Ohio/ St. Paris Graham) and Adam Britt (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) both won a match and lost a match in the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Kemper Arena on Thursday.

Erwin, a senior 174-pounder defeated Hunter Guenot of Bloomsburg, 2-1 The win put Erwin in a tie for third place in career victories at VMI (109) with Leslie Apedoe. In the second round, Erwin lost a tough 4-3 match to Hofstra's Ralph Everett.

Britt, a senior 157-pounder fell to 11th-seeded Nate Wachter of Penn State, 4-3 in his tournament's first round. He then came back to score a technical fall (16-1) over Millersville's Craig Pequinot in 7:00 in the consolation pigtail rouund round. Britt became VMI's all-time win leader (120) two weeks ago at the Southern Conference Championships.

Britt advances to wrestle Rob Belville of Sacred Heart on Thursday night. Erwin will next wrestle the winner of James Madison's Seth Cameron and Michigan's Pat Owen in the consolation bracket second round on Friday morning. The tournament runs through the championship round on Saturday.
