Football 3/15/2003 5:45:00 PM Southern Conference Wofford Announces 2003 Football Schedule A season opener at Air Force and six home games for the firsttime since 1993 highlight the 2003 Wofford College football scheduleannounced March 13. The Terriers will meet Air Force, coached by 1960 Woffordgraduate Fisher DeBerry, on Aug. 30 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The tripwill represent the farthest west a Wofford football team has evertraveled in addition to being the Terriers' first football game againsta Mountain West Conference foe. It will also be Wofford's eighthDivision I-A opponent in the last six seasons. Following the Air Force game, Wofford will host South CarolinaState in the Sept. 6 home opener at Gibbs Stadium. The contest will markthe Bulldogs' first appearance in Spartanburg, S.C., since 1976. Woffordand S.C. State met on the gridiron last season for the first time in 25years with the Terriers taking a 7-6 decision in Orangeburg, S.C. Following an open date on Sept. 13, Wofford will begin itsseventh season in the SoCon when it hosts Georgia Southern on Sept. 20.The Terriers defeated the Eagles, 14-7, last year in Statesboro, Ga., onthe way to a second-place finish in the SoCon with a 6-2 league record.Wofford was 9-3 overall in concluding the 2002 campaign ranked No. 11 byESPN/USA Today and No. 14 by The Sports Network. Wofford will then face its final non-conference opponent onSept. 27 when Catawba visits Gibbs Stadium. The Indians were 8-3 lastyear and have advanced to the Division II playoffs in each of the lastfour seasons. Wofford and Catawba will play for the 44th team overall,but will be meeting for the first time since 1995. The Terriers return to SoCon play the following week, Oct. 4,when they travel to Chattanooga. The Oct. 11 home game with Elon willmark the Terriers' first SoCon meeting against the Phoenix. With VMIdeparting for the Big South Conference, Elon is the league's newestmember. Wofford defeated the Phoenix, 34-9, in the regular-season finalelast year in Elon, N.C. Wofford's remaining SoCon home games will be Oct. 25 versusAppalachian State and Nov. 8 against East Tennessee State. The Terrierswill have road games at Western Carolina (Oct. 18), The Citadel (Nov.1), and Furman (Nov. 15). With six home games in addition to away contests at The Citadeland Furman, Wofford will leave the state of South Carolina just threetimes in the 2003 campaign.
