Appalachian State Sweeps '03 Indoor Track and Field Championships

Johnson City, TN -- Appalachian State continued its quest for the triple crown as the Mountaineers won the 2003 Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships in Johnson City, TN. The ASU women finished with 186.5 points with the men finishing with 186 points. The win gives the Appalachian State conference record 13 men's indoor team titles and 10 women's indoor titles.

Appalachian State's Daniel Duckworth started the day for the men, winning the weight throw with a distance of 58'1.25". VMI's Kevin Solomon won the triple jump with a mark of 48'0.75" while Western Carolina's Sean Heaton won the pole vault with a mark of 15'5.75". VMI swept the high jump with Garrett Brickner winning the event with a height of 6'9.75", followed by Keydets Chris Walker and Kamau Hall. Appalachian State's Holt McPherson and Anthony Greer were selected the Men's Indoor Field Performers of the Year.

In the men's track events, ETSU's Bradley Yewer picked up the mile title with a time of 4:14.36. VMI's Jeff McKelvin won the 55-meter hurdles for the Keydets with a time of 7.75 and The Citadel's Alex Prince took home the 400-meter title (48.78). Appalachian State's Jason Green won the 55-meter in an NCAA provisional time of 6.26, with teammate Ernest Wiggins finishing second and WCU's Alford Tee taking third. In the 800-meter, Western Carolina hit the one-two punch with John Robertson (1:52.11) edging Caleb Bailey (1:52.33). Green won his second event of the day with a 24.61 winning time in the 200-meter, followed by Wiggins and The Citadel's Kenyon Doyle. Western Carolina's John Robertson was named the men's Freshman of the Year.

Yewer, who was named the Men's Indoor Track Performer of the Year, finished the meet winning the 5,000 in a time of 15:04.83, edging Chattanooga's Steven Kocsis by one-tenth of a second. The Citadel picked up a win on the 4x400-meter relay, winning the event in a time of 3:16.34. Appalachian State head coach John Weaver was named the Men's Coach of the Year.

Appalachian State's Ronda White set a conference record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.86, also an NCAA provisional mark. Chattanooga's Shannon Womack added the mile title to her credit in a time of 4:58.90 while teammate Tiffany pointer took home the 400-meter crown in a time of 56.97. In a close race for the 55-meter title, Georgia Southern's Rashedah Arnold (7.05) edged ASU's Jennifer Claud (7.06) with ETSU's Chantelle Vernon finishing third. Mountaineer Katie Sujkowski won the 800-meter with a time of 2:19.45, beating out Chattanooga's Amy Doolittle (2:19.81) and WCU's Tonya Edmonds (2:21.02). Arnold picked up her second title of the day with a win in the 200-meter (24.42), slipping past ASU's Jennifer Claud (24.46), and earning her Freshman of the Year honors. Sarah Primeau of Appalachian State won the 5,000-meter with a time of 17:43.56. Georgia Southern finished the meet setting a conference record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:47.35. Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier was named the women's Coach of the Year by his peers.

In the women's field events on Saturday, LaShana Poole, who was selected the women's Field Performer of the Year, won the weight throw for Appalachian State with a mark of 57'2" with the Mountaineers sweeping the triple jump. Ronda White won her second event of the day and hit an NCAA provisional mark of 41'4.5", followed by Tondra White and Jennifer Claud. Laura Tieszen of Western Carolina won the pole vault with a mark of 12'1.25".
