Davidson Women's Basketball Drops 60-54 Decision to Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. - For most of the game, it looked as if the Davidson women's basketball team was going to spoil Georgia Tech's home opener, but the Yellow Jackets rallied in the final three minutes to pull out a 60-54 victory. With the win, Tech improves to 4-1 overall while the Wildcats fall to 2-4.

Following three early ties at the start of the game, Davidson would establish a lead as large as eight, 20-12, when sophomore Janell Crayton hit a three-pointer with 6:07 remaining in the half. The Wildcats had a couple of chances to go up by double figures, but were unable to convert. After trading baskets in the following few minutes, Georgia Tech tallied the final five points of the period to cut the deficit to 27-24 at the break.

Davidson clung to its slim advantage in the second half until the Yellow Jackets' Fallon Stokes converted a layup at 10:38 to push Georgia Tech ahead, 40-38. Following a Davidson timeout, the 'Cats responded with an 8-2 spurt, highlighted by a Katie Hamilton trifecta, to go up by four, 46-42, with 7:28 left.

Unfortunately, the tide of the game seemed to turn in the following four minutes. Davidson committed four turnovers and four fouls in that stretch while Georgia Tech went to the free throw line eight times. The net result was a 9-1 Yellow Jacket run that saw the home team grab a 51-47 lead.

Georgia Tech went on to extend its advantage to as many as seven before holding on for the 60-54 final.

The Wildcats held Georgia Tech to just 29-percent shooting (18-of-62) for the contest. However, the Jackets earned 36 trips to the charity stripe for the game (22-of-36) and forced 22 Davidson turnovers.

Stokes paced Tech with 23 points, 19 of which came in the final 20 minutes. She also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior Ashley Hallsted tallied a team-best 11 points for the Wildcats while fellow senior Meghan Bryant chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds.

Davidson will host its first game of the season and open conference play this Saturday, Dec. 6, against Wofford. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
