The Citadel 45, Davidson 3

Charleston, SC---The Citadel Bulldog wrestling team captured its first dual win of the season as they downed Davidson 45-3 in Southern Conference wrestling action Tuesday night in McAlister Field House.

The Citadel (1-0, 1-0 SoCon) used four falls and one tech fall to capture its first SoCon and dual victory of the season. Davidson drops to 0-1 in the conference.

"I'm proud of the team's effort tonight," commented Citadel coach Rob Hjerling. "It was good to get the win over a conference opponent, but there are several areas we still need to improve upon in order for us to win the SoCon."

Junior Ryan McClester, who is ranked 10th nationally by Wrestling Mall, earned a technical fall in his 125-pound match by blanking the Wildcats' Drew Carey 15-0, while fellow junior Sean Markey (133) pinned Travis Hunter at 3:37. Markey, ranked nationally by Amateur Wrestling News at number 12, gave his squad 6 team points to push the Bulldog lead to 11-0

Following up with a second consecutive fall and giving The Citadel a 17-0 advantage was 141-pound Bulldog freshman Levi Duyn. Duyn pinned Matt Leonard only 1:59 into the match. After 149-pound sophomore Travis Piccard got 14-4 victory over Davidson's Henry Blue and the Wildcats forfeited the 157-pound match, the Bulldogs had a commanding 27-0 lead.

At 165, The Citadel's Mike Martinez got a 7-2 win over Mark O'Hair to push the Dogs in front 30-0. Following Martinez's victory, teammate James Rose, a 174-pound senior, defeated Adam Sperling 6-1 to put the match out of reach 33-0.

The Wildcats got their lone victory of the night as the 184-pound Matt Morris used a come-from-behind win over sophomore John Dickerson to give the Wildcats three team points.

The Bulldogs ended the match with back-to-back falls as freshman Nick Leone pinned Jayson Powers at the 1:55 mark of the 197-pound match. Junior Billy Linane, who is ranked 18th by the Amateur Wrestling News, sealed the match for the Bulldogs with a fall over Wildcat heavyweight John Pollack at the 1:19 mark.

The Bulldogs will travel to Chapel Hill and to the campus of North Carolina on Saturday, December 6, to participate in the UNC Open. Hjerling's squad will be back at home on January 20th as the host Anderson at 7 pm in McAlister Field House.
