Davidson 98, Clarkson 60

DAVIDSON, N.C. - It all finally seemed to come together in the same game. The Davidson men's basketball team hit shots, played strong defense and handled the ball with poise as it rolled to a 98-60 victory over the Clarkson Golden Knights in Belk Arena on Friday evening. The 'Cats remain perfect at home and improve to 4-5 this season while Clarkson falls to 3-3 overall.

Production from junior forward Logan Kosmalski continued to mean good things for the Wildcats, as he dumped in a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 from the field in just 21 minutes of action. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and became the first 'Cat to record a double-double this season. Kosmalski has been the leading scorer in all four Davidson victories this season.

Sophomore forward Ian Johnson added 20 points in the effort, connecting on 6-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. This was the first time Davidson has had two players reach the 20-point barrier in the same game this year. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Brendan Winters netted 12 points to extend his double-digit scoring streak to eight consecutive games.

"I was particularly pleased with how deep we got the ball in the post," said head coach Bob McKillop. "Logan and Ian were terrific, and Conor (Grace) did a good job down low as well."

The Wildcats opened the contest scoring 26 of the game's first 33 points and didn't let up. Kosmalski scored eight of the team's first 11 points, connecting in the paint as well as from long range. For the game, Davidson scored 34 points in the paint to Clarkson's eight. The Wildcats scored on each of their first 14 possessions of the game, recording 31 points in almost nine minutes before coming up scoreless on a trip down the floor.

Davidson turned the ball over a season-low four times in the first half, while capitalizing on the Golden Knight's 13 mishandles. The 'Cats netted 27 points off Clarkson turnovers in the opening half and 40 points in the contest.

After holding a 49-24 halftime lead, Davidson put together a 21-8 run to build a lead of 40 points with more than 12 minutes to play. The Wildcats would get 41 points from their bench and hit 32-of-41 free throws in the victory.

Junior forward Conor Grace also scored in double figures for the 'Cats, netting 11 points and pulling down five rebounds. Sophomore guard Matt McKillop added 10 points, reaching double-digit scoring for the third straight game.

Davidson goes back on the road for the remainder of 2003 as the Wildcats face Seton Hall on Monday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m., in Continental Airlines Arena. Clarkson will be at Southwestern on Saturday, Jan. 3.

The Citadel 89, Chowan 72

Charleston, SC - Senior forward Max Mombollet posted 20 points and 10 rebounds en route to his third double-double of the season to lead The Citadel past Chowan, 89-72, in collegiate basketball action Friday night in McAlister Field House.

"Max played well for us tonight, but don't forget that Kevin Hammack, Erick Wilson and Dante Terry shot exceptionally well from three-point land," Citadel head coach Pat Dennis stated. "I am very happy with our performance tonight and hope we will build on this going into the Georgetown game."

Dennis was right as the Bulldogs shot an impressive 54.5-percent from beyond the three-point arch as Wilson lead the way with five threes. The Citadel (3-6) trailed only twice in the whole contest as Chowan's Roland Brown hit a lay-up at 16:22 in the first half to put the Braves up 8-7.

Following a free-throw by Hammack, Mombollet hit a lay-up to put the Bulldogs up for good at 10-8 with 15:30 on the clock in the first. The Citadel never looked back and increased the defensive pressure as they converted 28 points off of turnovers. For the first time all season the Bulldogs had five scorers in double-digits as Wilson posted 17, freshman forward J'mel Everhart scored 15, Hammack added 14 and Terry chimed in with 11.

Chowan (4-4) was lead offensively by guard Roland Brown who scored 23 points and added seven rebounds. Joining Brown in double figures were forward Trayvon Lathan with 13 and forward Isaac McCall with 11.

Of note, coach Dennis earned his 133rd overall victory as the Bulldog's head coach pushing him into first place all-time and past current Director of Athletics Les Robinson on the all-time win list.

"It has been really fun and tough during my years here at The Citadel," Dennis added. "Coach Robinson was a great coach and to be in the same company as him is a great honor."

The Citadel returns to action on Monday, December 22nd against Georgetown at 7:00 pm in McAlister Field House, while Chowan will break for the holidays.
