Women's Soccer Results from Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2

Chattanooga 7, Elon 1

ELON, NC -- The Chattanooga Lady Mocs found the back of the net seven times on Friday afternoon to defeat the Elon Phoenix 7-1 in Southern Conference women's soccer action from Rudd Field. The victory improved UTC to 9-5-3 overall and 6-2-3 in league play while Elon fell to 3-14-0, 2-8-0. The loss also eliminates the Phoenix from contention for a Southern Conference Tournament spot.

Elfa Erlingsdottir opened the scoring in the 15th minute, depositing a pass from Maya Peel past the Phoenix keeper. The Lady Mocs upped the lead to 2-0 when Diana Jallo, the league's leading goal-scorer, scored the first of her three goals in the 26th minute. Brooke Crandall assisted on Jallo's first goal. UTC added two more first half scores as both Melyna Valdez and Crandall scored. Amelie Fogleberg and Lisa Becht earned assists.

Jallo struck for goal two on the day in the 58th minute on an unassisted goal to make the score 5-0. Elon would net its only goal of the day when Jaclyn Immordino scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from Lacey Whitmer in the 65th minute.

Crandall would score her second goal of the afternoon in the 75th minute on an assist from Fogleberg and Jallo finished off the hat trick in the 90th minute on an assist from Erlingsdottir. Jallo now has 15 goals on the season.

Kara Zagol and Jessica Geguzis split the 90 minutes in net evenly for the Phoenix. Zagol grabbed four saves and Geguzis two. Stacey Matthiessen went the distance in goal for Chattanooga, making four saves.

Chattanooga outshot Elon 33-13 overall and 13-5 on goal. The Lady Mocs also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Phoenix will end its season on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Georgia Southern. Chattanooga will wait to see what seed it will receive into the Southern Conference Tournament that begins on Nov. 6 in Greensboro, NC.


UNC Greensboro 5, Georgia Southern 0

GREENSBORO, NC ? Sophomore Amy Carnell (Lake Stevens, WA) scored a pair of goals to help the UNCG women?s soccer team defeat Georgia Southern, 5-0 in Southern Conference women?s soccer action, Friday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, UNCG improves to 10-6-2 overall, 8-2 in the SoCon, while Georgia Southern falls to 5-13-1, 1-8-1 in the SoCon.
The win for the Spartans clinches the second seed in next week?s SoCon Tournament, which will be hosted by UNC Greensboro.
"Our kids played very well tonight", said head coach Eddie Radwanski. "I?m quite pleased that we came out aggressive, got an early goal and built the momentum for tonight." We did a real good job knocking the ball around and creating chances. Again, our team defending tonight was very good."
After a goal by Carolyn Lindsay at the 14:41 mark to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead, sophomore Cara Hammond notched her third goal on the season off a feeD from senior Tracey Withrow to give UNCG a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Sophomore Dacia Beachum increaseD the UNCG lead to 4-0 at the 60:32 mark when she took a pass from senior Cheryl Stewart a knocked it in the back of the net.
UNCG sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Stillman recorded two saves on the evening in recording her seventh shutout of the year. Georgia Southern keeper Kari Gast posted 10 saves on the game for the Eagles.
UNCG will close out the regular season at Davidson, Sunday November 2 at 2 p.m. Georgia Southern will travel to Elon to take on the Phoenix on Sunday at 1 p.m.


Furman 1, Appalachian State 0

BOONE, North Carolina -- The Lady Paladin soccer team extended its
unbeaten streak to a school-record 12 matches Friday night, and improved
to 13-4-2 on the year with a 1-0 victory over the Mountaineers of
Appalachian State.

A scoreless tie continued more than 20 minutes into the second period
when, at the 66:47 mark, Emily Turgeon headed in a Kat Kelly corner kick
to give Furman all the offense it would need for the win. Goalkeeper
Andie Hinshaw recorded nine saves in the shutout.

The Furman win marks the fourth year in the last five that the Lady
Paladins have completed SoCon regular season play without at loss. It
also extends Furman?s Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 24 matches,
which breaks the previous league mark of 23 , set by the Lady Paladins in
1999-2000.

Turgeon?s goal puts the senior forward from Raleigh, N.C. three goals away
from tying the Southern Conference all-time leading goal record. Next
week Turgeon and the rest of the regionally-ranked Lady Paladin team will
travel to Greensboro, N.C. as the top seeded team in the Southern
Conference Tournament. Furman will play Thursday at 11 a.m. against the
as yet undetermined eight-seed.


High Point 4, Wofford 0

In its final regular-season match, the Wofford women's soccer team fell
at High Point, 4-0, Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers scored two quick first-half goals, at 13:26 and 16:24, as
Sarah Hanson and Anni Svensson, respectively, tallied their first goals
of the year.

Just under a minute into the second half, at 45:51, High Point added to
its point total when Carolyn Bader scored her first goal of the game off
an initial save by Wofford goalkeeper Katie Relihan. Bader found the
back of the net again at 67:55 to close the scoring.

Senior Jaime Cutts recorded seven of the nine Lady Terrier shots in the
contest.

With the loss, Wofford drops to 7-8-3, while High Point improves to 8-9.

The Lady Terriers will continue their season Thursday, Nov. 6, in the
opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Their first-round opponent is to be determined.


Western Carolina 5, The Citadel 0

Charleston, SC - The Citadel women's soccer team completed their regular season Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs fell to the Catamounts of Western Carolina (7-9-2,4-6-0SoCon) in Southern Conference action at Washington Light Infantry.

Western Carolina's freshman Stephanie Svoboda posted two goals, while sophomore Natasha Moore tallied two assists.

"Our seniors Katrina Evans and Rose Rodriguez will truly be missed," commented Megan Hjerling. "We had sparks of solid play, but could not keep it together for the full 90 minutes. Western Carolina came to play and did well."

Svoboda put the Catamounts on the board early with a 20 yard shot off a pass from Moore, four minutes into the match. Ten minutes later, Moore assisted senior Jordan Howell, and sophomore Casey Davis wrapped up the half at the 37:00 mark to put Western Carolina up 3-0 at the half.

Svoboda netted her second goal of the game at 56:49 on a deflection off Howell's shot from the 18. Senior Kristen Deon finished the score at 5-0 as she found the back of the net at 81:21.

The Citadel's goalkeeper senior Rose Rodriguez had 3 saves in 45 minutes of action, while Western Carolina's senior Tina Weaver tallied two saves in 65 minutes of play and the win.
The Citadel finished the season 2-14-1, 0-11-0 SoCon.
