College of Charleston 3, Davidson 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - College of Charleston rebounded from its first conference loss in 30 matches this past Wednesday to beat the Davidson volleyball squad Saturday afternoon, 31-29, 30-15 and 30-28. The Cougars' (21-5, 12-1 SoCon) win puts them in a tie with Georgia Southern at the top of the South Division of the Southern Conference while Davidson falls to 12-17 overall and 5-8 in league action.

Davidson, looking for back-to-back wins for only the fifth time all year, came out on fire in the first game. The Wildcats won the first four points and quickly pulled away behind 11 kills to establish an 11-point cushion, 19-8.

After trading a few points to get to 23-13, Charleston slowly began to claw its way back. The Cougars forced Davidson to call for time after a 5-0 run cut the deficit to 23-18. Charleston didn't let up and would eventually knot the score at 28-28. A kill by senior Latisha Chapman earned the Wildcats a game point, but sophomore Rachel Gleed's resulting serve floated just long. Alisa Long then tallied her third service ace of the game to give Charleston a game point at 30-29. The Cougars completed the comeback on a Davidson attack error.

The Wildcats were unable to win a point on serve in the first game after being up by a commanding 21-10 count.

With the momentum completely shifted to Charleston's side following the first game, the Cougars took advantage at the start of game two. The visitors earned eight of the first nine points in the second game and never looked back. Charleston held Davidson to a -.028 attack percentage while cruising to a 30-15 triumph.

It certainly looked as if the Cougars were going to earn a decisive sweep when the score was 19-9 in the third game, but Davidson wouldn't lay down. The Wildcats shrugged off five match points to pull within one, 29-28. Unfortunately, Stephanie Ballard ended the contest with her match-high 15th kill of the afternoon.

Alisa Long (13 kills) and Rebecca Wieters (10) each finished with double-figure putaways for the Cougars as well. Meanwhile, libero Marie Dobrenz notched 20 digs to lead all players.

Chapman paced Davidson with 13 kills, five blocks and two aces. Freshman Jenny Mills chipped in with eight putaways and a .429 attack percentage.

Davidson will next host Georgia Southern on Monday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. The College of Charleston returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at The Citadel.
