Davidson's Britt and Gould Reach Finals in Flight 'B' Doubles at Top of the Hill Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior tennis players Jonathan Britt and Rob Gould led Davidson at the Top of the Hill Carolina Classic, hosted by North Carolina, by reaching the finals of the Flight 'B' doubles bracket.

The duo downed Richmond's Eric Hage and Matt Stillwagon in the opening round, 8-4, to advance to the semifinals. Britt and Gould then easily rolled over Paul Ambrose and Adam Banks of UNC Asheville, 8-3, to reach the finals. In the championship match, Britt and Gould lost to North Carolina's Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy, 8-4.

In singles action, senior Rob Haywood and junior Russ Burns each won two matches to reach the semifinals of their respective brackets. Playing in the Flight 'A' bracket, Haywood took out Florent Wilpotte of Campbell and UNC Asheville's Adam Banks in straight sets to earn a spot in the semis.

Haywood faced the top seed in the tournament, Nicholas Monroe of North Carolina, in the semifinals. After dropping the first set, 6-2, the senior battled back to win the second set in a tie-breaker. Unfortunately, Monroe pulled away in the third set, 6-2. The Tar Heel went on to win the finals as well.

Burns also used two straight set wins to reach the semifinals of the Flight 'C' bracket. In the first round, he defeated Jean Michel Werk of Charlotte, 6-3, 7-5. Burns had an easier time with Richmond's Ryan Goldsmith in the next round, winning by a count of 6-1, 6-4. In the semifinals, Burns fell to Zorick Toltsan of Campbell, 6-4, 6-2.
