Football 10/31/2003 6:39:00 PM Southern Conference Wofford's Miner, Nelson Named To I-AA All-Star Game SPARTANBURG, SC -- Wofford punter Jimmy Miner and free safety Matt Nelson have beenselected to play in the inaugural TFN/ Division I-AA All-Star Classic tobe held Dec. 30 at Lockhardt Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.The contest will be broadcast nationally on The Football Network and onregional sports networks in various markets around the country to anestimated audience of 35 million people.Miner and Nelson are the first two Terriers named to the squad. They join six other Southern Conference players who were previously named to the game: DB Derrick Black of Appalachian State, DE K.T. Stovall of Appalachian State, DB Tony Tiller of East Tennessee State, DE Michale Spicer of Western Carolina, PK Danny Marshall of Furman and WR Scooter Johnson of The Citadel. The two 50-player squads will be coached by the staffs of WesternKentucky and McNeese State, last year's participants in the I-AAnational championship game. Miner is the Terriers' career leader in average at 40.9 yards. He hasWofford second in the SoCon and seventh nationally in net punting with a38.2 mark this fall. He set a single-season Terrier record last yearwith a 42.2 overall average.A three-time All-SoCon selection, Miner was ranked by The Sports Networkin the preseason as the third-best punter in Division I-AA. He has ninepunts of at least 50 yards this season. The senior from Kennesaw, Ga.,has seven punts inside the 20-yard line with just one touchback. Nelson, a first-team All-America last year and a two-time All-SoConchoice, is the anchor of the Wofford defense. The senior from GroveCity, Ohio, has 391 career tackles and is on pace to break the Terriers'all-time mark of 411 (Bret Masters, 1985-88).Nelson is already Wofford's career leader in solo stops (261). He setthe mark earlier this year in a 20-14 win over Georgia Southern. Aftertying the game at 14-14 in the fourth quarter, Wofford forced athree-and-out by the Eagles with Nelson recording the tackle on allthree plays. The Terriers then proceeded to begin their game-winningdrive. He preserved the win when he batted down a Hail Mary pass at thegoal line with 0.9 seconds to play.Nelson has a team-best 106 tackles in the opening eight games this year.His 114 and 131 stops the last two seasons are the highest tackle totalsin the 16-year Wofford tenure of coach Mike Ayers. Nelson also has threeinterceptions this season to go with nine pass breakups and two forcedfumbles.TFN will provide live coverage of a number of Division 1-AA conferences, including the Big South, the Southern Conference, the Atlantic-10 and the Big Sky, and will produce the first ever I-AA All-Star Classic on December 30, as well as the TFN Awards which will recognize standout performances from all levels of the game. In addition, TFN has agreements with the National Women's Football Association, Pop Warner Football, and the U.S. Flag & Touch Football League. Agreements have also been announced with the College Football Hall of Fame and with Pat Summerall, and Jerry Glanville, to be network broadcasters. .Made-for-television movies will also be part of the program lineup. TFN's first film will be based on Penn State's Adam Taliaferro and his battle to defeat football-related paralysis (from the book, "Miracle in the Making"). TFN already produces radio reports, heard three times a week on the syndicated Sports Byline USA, and has produced, and is developing, programs to be seen on other cable networks until its own signal is launched.
