Volleyball 10/27/2003 3:23:00 AM Southern Conference Volleyball Results from Sunday College of Charleston 3, Chattanooga 0CHARLESTON, SC- Stephanie Ballard and Alisa Long each posted 17 kills as the College of Charleston (20-4, 11-0) downed Chattanooga (12-12, 7-5) three games to none in Southern Conference volleyball action. The Cougars captured their 29th consecutive conference match and their 27th consecutive home conference match, both are Southern Conference records. The Cougars won with game scores of 30-22, 30-23, and 30-22. Ballard recorded 10 kills and nine digs in the opening game of the match. The Mocs started the game with a 11-5 run and forced the Cougars to take an early timeout. Charleston came out of the timeout on a run and went on a 10-4 run to tie the game up at 15. The Cougars won 15 of the game's next 22 points to take the opening game 30-22. In the second game Long chipped in seven kills and the Cougars took the game 30-23. Long sent home the match's final point with a kill and an assist from Kaycie Carr and the Cougars took game three 30-22. Sara Davis added 14 kills in the win and Marie Dobrenz, who is fourth in the country in digs, added 22 in the three games. Dobrenz recorded 15 of her team leading 22 digs in the third and final game of the match. Jody Steinberger led the way for the Mocs with 10 kills and Dominique Mayor recorded 19 digs. The Mocs next host Western Carolina on Thursday night in Chattanooga at 7:00 PM. The Cougars travel down to Statesboro, GA for a showdown with Georgia Southern on Wednesday also at 7:00 PM.Elon 3, Davidson 2DAVIDSON, N.C. - Thanks to a match-high 19 kills by Emily Hayes and a season-best 32 digs by Mary Kate Spear, the Elon volleyball squad was able to upend Davidson in five games, 23-30, 30-23, 30-22, 22-30 and 15-6, Sunday afternoon in Belk Arena. The Wildcats (11-16, 4-7 SoCon) were previously unbeaten at home in conference play (3-0) before the loss to Elon (12-14, 5-6).In the decisive game, the two teams exchanged the first five points before the visiting Phoenix rattled off six consecutive points to go up, 8-3. Davidson won the next two rallies, but Elon put the match out of reach with another 6-0 spurt. It looked as if the Wildcats were headed to their second win in two days after the first game. Davidson easily captured the opening game as freshman Jenny Mills led the attack with five putaways and a perfect 1.000 attack percentage.However, things quickly turned around in game two. Elon rebounded with a match-high .415 hitting percentage in the second game to level the contest at 1-1. The third game saw the Phoenix jump on top of Davidson early, 13-7. The Wildcats were only able to get as close as two points the rest of the way as Elon held the 'Cats to just a .043 attack percentage in game three.Davidson was able to force a fifth and deciding game due to a pair of 5-0 runs late in the fourth game. Freshman Jenna Dykstra tallied seven kills and a .583 attack percentage for the Wildcats in that game.Besides Hayes' 19 putaways, the outside hitter recorded seven digs while not recording an error to finish with a .475 attack percentage. Brooke Pickard (14 kills, 10 digs) and Maria LaBrutto (12, 15) each recorded double-doubles for the Phoenix in their first win over Davidson since 1986.Dykstra notched her second career triple-double in the Wildcat loss. She ended the day with personal-highs in kills (19) and assists (23) to go along with 13 digs. The Eagles move to 17-9 overall, 11-1 in conference action, while UNC Greensboro falls to 7-16 on the season, and 3-8 in the SoCon. Savannah State falls to 2-28 on the season. Georgia Southern also extended their home conference winning streak to 16 straight matches, a record dating back to the 2002 season. In the first match of the day, the Eagles started out strong, with a .517 hitting percentage on only three attacking errors, while UNC Greensboro hit a .063. Leading the way for the Eagles in game one was Martina Veiglova, who had a game high 14 kills and a .684 hitting percentage. The Eagles tallied three services aces in the first game, two coming from junior Janice Pressley. The Spartans bounced back in game two, with LaJean Morrow leading the way with three service aces, and a total of five aces by the team. The service aces were not enough, however, as the Eagles answered back and went into game three with a two game advantage. Georgia Southern came out of the break strong, not committing a single attacking error in game three. The Eagles closed out the match on a kill by freshman Erin Barton. Junior Susan Winkelman had 48 assists against UNC Greensboro, setting a new GSU record for assists in a match. The previous record was 47, set by Jennifer McNally in 1994. Also reaching record heights was Martina Veiglova, who tied her record of most kills in a three-game match, with 26. Veiglova finished the match with a double-double, adding 14 digs to her 26 kills. She also had a .521 hitting percentage. Leading the way for the Spartans were LaJean Morrow, who had three service aces, 15 digs and eight kills. Setter Adrian Hicks had 27 assists on the day. The second match of the day saw the Eagles face non-conference foe Savannah State. The Eagles dominated the net, with four team blocks and a .393 hitting percentage. Senior Erin Martin recorded a double-double with 12 kills and ten digs. Martin is four kills shy of the 1,000 career kills record. Junior Kristen Kasprak aided the Eagles with four service aces and eight digs. Setter Susan Winkelman had 36 assists and four service aces. In total, the Eagles tallied eleven service aces against the Tigers. The Tigers were led by Tonya Holmes, who notched six kills and five digs. Setter Patricia Ortiz tallied 13 assists on the night. Lynn Tyldesley notched four kills and seven digs. The Eagles will look to break their home attendance record on Wednesday, October 29 in a pivotal Southern Conference match-up against the College of Charleston. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
