Davidson 1, Furman 0

DAVIDSON, N.C.- David Peoples scored on a penalty kick at the 58:03 mark to lift Davidson to a 1-0 victory over Furman in men's soccer action
Saturday afternoon at Varsity Soccer Field in Davidson, N.C.

The win was Davidson's first over the Paladins since 1997 and keeps the Wildcats, 10-4-2 overall and 4-1 in the league play, in first place in the
Southern Conference.

Peoples' goal, which was drilled by Furman keeper Alex Maslow, came after a hard foul in the box in the 59th minute.

The Paladins kept the pressure on Davidson for much of the second half, outshooting the Wildcats 7-6, but were unable to find the back of the net.

"This is definitely a tough loss to take against a strong Davidson team," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We had our chances to score in the
second half, but we just could not capitalize."

The loss drops Furman to 3-7-4 overall and 1-2-2 in Southern Conference play.

Furman returns to action when it travels to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State on November 2.

Appalachian State 1, Elon 0 (OT)

ELON, NC -- Matt Breeding scored his second goal of the season to send visiting Appalachian State (5-9-1, 3-3-0 Southern Conference) to a 1-0 overtime men's soccer conference victory over Elon (4-8-1, 1-4-1) at Rudd Field on Saturday afternoon.

In the scoreless first half, each team mustered 12 total shots, but never seriously threatened to score. After the break it was more of the same. The Mountaineers got off seven second period shots to Elon's five.

The first shot of the overtime period, however, did find the net off the foot of Breeding who corralled a pass from Geoff Christman. Christman had received the ball off of Fredrick Henriksen's free kick. Breeding got off the quick shot and placed it past a diving Taylor Saxe, the Phoenix keeper, into the bottom right corner of the goal at 96:06.

Both squads took plenty of shots as Appalachian State outshot Elon by a 20-17 margin overall and 14-4 on goal. The teams combined for 30 fouls and four cards to go along with the 37 shots. The Phoenix held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks and recorded no offsides compared to seven offsides calls against the Mountaineers.

Saxe made 13 saves in going the distance for Elon, while his counterpart Philip Cavicchia grabbed three saves in his 96:06.

Up next for Elon is a trip to the ACC's Clemson on Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m. The Mountaineers will return to Boone, NC to host conference rival Furman on Nov. 2 at 5:00 p.m.
