Wofford 2, The Citadel 0

After a scoreless first half, the Wofford women's soccer team tallied
two goals in the second frame and held on for a 2-0 victory over The
Citadel Friday evening at Snyder Field.

After a long pass from the Wofford back line to just over the mid-line,
Lady Terrier sophomore forward Mallory Bramlett won a 50-50 ball with a
Bulldog defender and raced towards the goal. As she approached the
18-yard box, Bramlett chipped the ball over a charging Rose Rodriguez
for the game's first goal at 67:18.

Just over four and a half minutes later, at 71:51, freshman Jessica
Connett was dribbling again towards the Citadel goal only to be tackled
from behind just inside the 18-yard box. Junior Christine Pezzutti
scored the ensuing penalty kick, Wofford's first of the season, to close
the scoring at 2-0.

After freshman Katie Relihan stopped one of four Bulldog shots in the
first half, fellow classmate Austin Somers came in and played the final
45 minutes in net and recorded two saves to garner a shared shutout.

"We definitely struggled quite a bit in the first half as we really
didn't come out to play," said head coach Amy Kiah. "But, I'll tell you
that it (The Citadel) is one of the most improved teams I've seen. I
definitely credit her (Bulldog head coach Megan Hjerling) for doing a
great job with recruiting. We came out in the second half and got a
couple goals.

"Sunday's game is going to be crucial now. It's our last home game of
the year. With it being Senior Day, we're going to miss Jaime Cutts and
Kate Schallhorn a whole lot. They both have brought a lot to the team
the last four years. It's going to be hard to not have them around
after this year, but hopefully we can play well and get a win for them
in their final home game."

With the victory, Wofford evens its record at 6-6-3, 4-3-2 in the
Southern Conference. The Bulldogs drop to 2-12-1 overall and 0-9 in the
league.

The Lady Terriers will wrap up their home slate with a 2 p.m. match up
Sunday against Davidson. Prior to the game, the team and Wofford
athletic department will honor Cutts and Schallhorn on Senior Day.

Furman 3, Davidson 0

GREENVILLE - Sophomore Andre'a Morrison scored two goals to lead Furman
passed Davidson 3-0 in Southern Conference women's soccer action Friday
night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, S.C. The win extends
Furman's Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 22 matches.

Morrison opened the scoring at the 1:43 mark, taking an Emily Turgeon
cross off an April Raymer long ball and placing it in the back of the net.
The Kernersville, N.C., native tallied her second goal of the night and
10th of the season in the 21st minute. Morrison, who has scored seven
goals in her last three matches, took the ball deep in Furman territory
and dribbled over 70 yards before firing a shot by Davidson keeper Sarah
Holbert from 20 yards out.

Freshman Maggie Welder capped the scoring early in the second half. Alice
Martin sent a cross through the box that Welder finished from eight yards
away for her first collegiate goal at the 52:31 mark.

"We came out tonight and played another solid match against a tough
conference opponent," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "I was proud of
our team for getting the lead early and staying focused defensively for 90
minutes."

Furman improves to 11-4-2 on the season and 8-0-1 in Southern Conference
play, while Davidson falls to 6-9-2 and 3-3-2 in league play. The win
extends Furman's unbeaten streak to 10 matches.

The Lady Paladins return to action next Wednesday night when they host the
Wofford Terriers.

East Tennessee State 3, Elon 1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 24, 2003) ? Kerri Burke?s (Raleigh, N.C.) goal in the second half of the match secured the win over the Phoenix as well as a spot in the playoffs for the Buccaneer women?s soccer team. East Tennessee State (11-3-0 overall, 6-2-0 SoCon) defeated Elon (3-13-0, 2-7-0), 3-1 in Friday night?s contest at Liberty Bell Field.
?It was a battle of wills,? stated head coach Heather Henson. ?The Elon team and coach Paul Webster are new to the Southern Conference and want to prove themselves early on.?

Elon got on the board with an own goal scored off of a corner kick at 19:49. The Phoenix goal would be the only goal of the first half.

At 58:58, senior Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) had a direct kick opportunity. She shot the ball into the mix in front of the goal where junior Jennifer Fields (Mount Airy, Md.) netted it to tie up the game at one a-piece.

?Jennifer made a great statement tonight,? commented Henson. ?It was great to see her step up her play and leadership on the field to send a special thank you to the seniors.?

Burke?s game-winning goal came at 80:45 of the second half. Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) assisted on the goal by directing the corner kick to Burke, who found the back of the net from six yards out.

Ashton then went on to provide an insurance goal when she scored off of a penalty kick at 81:42. Her goal brought the final score of 3-1.

Senior keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.) made five saves in the victory for ETSU, while Kara Zagol made 11 saves in the loss for the Phoenix.

?Heather had a great night in goal,? said Henson. ?Even though she made fewer saves then in previous games, the saves she made tonight were great and important for the win.?

The game marked the final home game of the season for the Buccaneers and the last time seniors Brown and Sanden would grace Liberty Bell field in a Buccaneer uniform. The two were recognized for their dedication and accomplishments in their four-year history in the program with a pre-game ceremony.

?There were a lot of emotions going on tonight because of senior night,? said Henson. ?We knew that this was going to be difficult, but we were able to collect ourselves towards the end to win control of the ball and find the back of the net.?

The Bucs now begin a series of three SoCon road games. Their first stop is Greensboro, N.C. on Sunday October 26th, where they will face the UNCG Spartans. Game time is set for 2:00p.m.
