Cross Country Capsules for September 14

FURMAN CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PLACE SIXTH,FOURTH AT NAVY INVITATIONAL

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- Furman's men's and women's cross country teams
recorded finishes of sixth and fourth, respectively, in the Navy
Invitational Saturday in Annapolis, Md.

Junior Kevin Crosby (Matthews, N.C.) paced the Paladins to a score of 160
with a 13th-place time of 25:39.73 over the 8K course. Matt Goodwin
(Greenville, S.C.) placed 25th in 25:54.81, Grady Powell (Erie, Pa.) was
39th in 26:26.21, and Ben Whitaker (Brimingham, Ala.) took 45th in
26:43.77. Freshman Tyler Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn.) rounded out the
Paladin scorers with a 47th-place finish and 26:46.44 time.

The Lady Paladins were led by sophomore Whitney Sharp, who completed the 5K
course in 19:29.69 and took 13th individually, while leading Furman to a
129 point total. Other Furman scorers were Bev Roberts in 25th (19:57.75),
Brittany Thompson in 30th (20:05.64), Carly Smith in 35th (20:13.36) and
Rebekah Potts in 45th (20:29.09).

The Furman cross country team will return to action next Saturday at the
Pre-Southern Conference meet in Charleston, S.C.

VMI Men's Cross Country Places 10th of 15 at U.S. Naval Academy Invitational
Women Compete Individually
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The VMI men's cross country team placed 10th of 15 teams
at the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational on Saturday morning, while the
women's team had individuals compete in their competition. VMI posted 259
points in the men's competition, 229 points behind meet-winner and host
Navy. The Midshipmen also won the women's competition with 50 points. The
Keydets only ran three women. Five runners are needed to compete as a team.

Senior Keydet Thomas Gorski (Marietta, Ga./ Pope) paced the men's team,
finishing in 33rd place with a time of 26:08.05 on the 8,000-meter course.
Junior Ryan Walker (Chester, Va./ Benedictine) placed 38th with a time of
26:24.83.

Freshman Anber Blain (Chesapeake, Va./ Western Branch) finished first among
VMI women's runners, placing 40th, with a time of 20:20.94 on the
5,000-meter course. Senior Alia Hamad (Alexandria, Va./ Bishop Ireton) came
in 54th place, clocking a time 20:36.90.

The Keydets will travel to New Market, Va.., where they will compete in the
JMU Invitational next Saturday. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.

WOMMACK S SECOND PLACE LEADS LADY MOCS CROSS COUNTRY TO THIRD PLACE AT TENNESSEE INVITATIONAL




KNOXVILLE, Tenn.---Chattanooga sophomore Shannon Wommack raced to her second top-two finish of the cross country season in as many races Friday and led the Lady Mocs to a third-place team finish at the Tennessee Cross Country Invitational.



Wommack, who won last week s UTC Opener, covered the 5k Lambert Acres Golf Club course in 18:08.42. She finished 8.6 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher, Tennessee s Brooke Novak. UT s Sharon Dickie was the overall winner at 17:56.60.



The Lady Vols placed five runners in the top 12 to claim the team title with 31 points. Vanderbilt was second with 60 points. UTC placed four runners in the top 14 and finished just behind the Lady Commodores with 64 points.



Gina Recher was the next UTC finisher with a sixth-place time of 18:45.76. Ellen Davis placed 11th (18:57.90), Amy Doolittle was 14th (19:16.88 ) and Channel Lemon was 31st (20:22.21).
