Stuart Lake Joins Cougar Baseball Staff

Charleston, S.C. -- Stuart Lake, an assistant coach at South
Carolina the past four seasons, has been named assistant coach at the
College of Charleston, Cougar coach John Pawlowski announced on August 20.

Lake takes over the position vacated by Gregg Mucerino. Mucerino
became the head coach at Loyola University New Orleans last week. Lake will
serve as the Cougars' third base coach and hitting instructor. He will
coach the outfielders and help Cougar assistant coach/recruiting
coordinator Scott Foxhall with recruiting.

"I'm very excited about joining the College of Charleston baseball
program" said Lake, who helped the Gamecocks reach the championship game of
the College World Series last season. "After meeting the faculty and staff
and seeing the direction the baseball program is headed, it made my
decision to join coach Pawlowski and his staff an easy one.

"Working the past four seasons for coach Ray Tanner has been a
wonderful and a tremendous learning experience for me. The knowledge and
experience I take from my years at South Carolina will help me throughout
my coaching career."

"To attract a quality a person and coach who has worked at a top 10
program will be a great fit for the College of Charleston" said Pawlowksi,
who led Charleston to a 36-22 mark last season. "We are certainly excited
about the addition of Stuart Lake to our program. He brings a tremendous
amount of experience and knowledge that will help us in our quest for
excellence both on and off the field."

"Coach Lake has done a tremendous job at the University of South
Carolina and I'm excited for him in his future at the College of
Charleston," said Tanner, who guided USC to a school-record 57 wins last
spring. "He will be an asset to Coach Pawlowski's staff as a coach and as
a recruiter."

While with the Gamecocks, Lake served as assistant camp coordinator
for Carolina baseball camps and helped coordinate on campus recruiting. The
last four Carolina recruiting classes were ranked 11th, 11th, 8th and 10th
nationally.

As coach of the outfielders, Lake helped guide a group considered
among the best in the nation. Over the past three seasons South Carolina
won more games than any NCAA Division I team (162-48, .771) including three
straight NCAA Regional and Super Regional appearances and last seasons trip
to Omaha.

Lake earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education with
a minor in sociology from Charleston Southern University in 1994 and a
master of arts in physical education from the University of South Carolina
in 1998. He's also a graduate of the Brinkman-Froeming School for Umpires,
operated by major league umpires Joe Brinkman and Bruce Froeming in Cocoa
Beach, Fla.

Lake gained head coaching experience during the summer of 2000 when
he managed Eadenton, N. C., in the Coastal Plains Collegiate League.

Born Stuart Daniel Lake on August 29, 1971 at Prosperity, S.C.,
Lake attended and played baseball at Mid-Carolina High School. Lake also
played two seasons at Charleston Southern University.

Lake spends times working and talking at coaching clinics with
parents and kids about the rules of the game as well as going through
standard baseball rules.

Lake entered the coaching profession as an assistant at
Mid-Carolina in 1996 and was assistant coach, 1997-98, at Brookland-Cayce
High School. Brookland-Cayce compiled a 56-11 record during those two
seasons, won the AAA state championship in 1998 and was upper state
runner-up in 1997.

Lake and the former Tracie Smith of Clover, S. C., were married
December 4, 1999.
