Catamounts Announce Women's Basketball Schedule

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University head women's basketball coach Beth Dunkenberger announced the program's 2002-03 schedule, which includes a trip out west to play in the St. Mary's (Ca.) Tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. The team will also face the ACC's Wake Forest University for the second consecutive year, this time in Winston-Salem, N.C., for a chance at a repeat of last year's victory over the Demon Deacons.

The Catamounts start out on the road, facing Gardner-Webb (Nov. 22), before their home opener against High Point University on Nov. 24 at 2:00 pm. Days later, the team travels to California for the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Tournament. Upon returning to Cullowhee, the team plays two road games against UNC Asheville (Dec. 2) and Savannah State (Dec. 9), and a home contest against Radford (Dec. 5), leading up to the game at Wake Forest on the 18th after a week of final exams.

In the team's final non-conference game of the season, the Lady Cats host Campbell University on Dec. 20. Their conference schedule begins on the 30th at Davidson College. Western will host home games on Jan. 6, 11 and 25 against Chattanooga, Georgia Southern and UNC Greensboro, respectively, while playing five road games that month. They host Davidson (Feb. 1), Wofford College (Feb. 3), East Tennessee State (Feb. 15), College of Charleston (Feb. 17) and conference rival Appalachian State (Feb. 22), with three conference road match-ups for the month.

The Catamounts end their regular season play as hosts to Furman University on March 1 before heading to the Southern Conference Tournament March 5-8, which will once again be held in the McAllister Field House and North Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C.

"I believe we've put together a highly competitive schedule that will prepare us for our Southern Conference match-ups," said Dunkenberger. "We're excited to be making a trip out to the west coast to play as well as facing an ACC team once again. We're looking forward to another great season of Catamount women's basketball."
