Chattanooga Women's Cross Country Earns Top 10 Academic Ranking

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Chattanooga women's cross-country team ranked No.
7 nationally out of 309 Division I programs in this year's NCAA
All-Academic Team Rankings.

The 2001 Southern Conference Champion Lady Mocs, who have ranked among the
top 10 academically every year but one since 1990, boasted a composite team
grade point average of 3.57.

"This recognition is definitely a testament to how serious our
student-athletes are about school and their futures," UTC head coach Bill
Gautier said.

The rankings are compiled by taking the average GPA of all team members and
submitting that to the NCAA for final evaluation at the commencement of the
fall term. The Lady Mocs, who posted the highest team GPA in both the fall
and spring of any UTC athletic team, were ranked ahead of BYU, Syracuse and
Nebraska in the top 10.

Two UTC student-athletes earned Academic All-America accolades, Oddbjorg
Haugen and Gina Recher. Haugen's GPA of 3.85 in Engineering was the 18th
highest in the nation among cross-country runners. She raced to a
10th-place finish at the 2001 NCAA South Region Cross-Country
Championships. Recher, the 2001 SoCon Cross Country Individual Champion,
has a 3.74 GPA in the School of Nursing.

Other teammates contributing to the squad's academic success are Shannon
Wommack with a 3.82 in Pre-Physical Therapy Studies, Ellen Davis with a
3.82 in English and Amy Doolittle, 3.50 in Cardiac Rehabilitation.
