GAME 14: WINCKLER LEADS UTC TO SOCON SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Chattanooga's Awbrey Winckler shut out Furman 9-0 Monday in the Championship Game of the 2002 Southern Conference Championships to give UTC the 2002 conference championship title.
The crown is the program's third consecutive SoCon Tournament Championship and sixth in the last seven years. With the win, UTC earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, which begins May 16 at regional sites.
Winckler registered her eighth shutout of the season and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She limited the Paladins (24-24) to just four hits while striking out five and walking none. Winckler has won nine straight decisions and 13 of her last 14.
The Lady Mocs (42-13) supported Winckler with 11 hits. A five-run fourth inning, keyed by a three-run triple off the bat of Melissa Ramirez, broke the game open for UTC. Ramirez, who drove in Teri Herbert, Amanda Woodall and Dana Reed with her triple, scored later in the ining on a wild pitch. Paige Cochrane drove home Jada Pescatore with a single to give UTC a 6-1 advantage.
The Lady Mocs struck for the game's first run in the third inning. They strung together two hits, a walk and reached on an error. Cochrane plated Ramirez with a single to give UTC a 1-0 lead.
After the fourth-inning explosion, UTC rounded out the scoring with a three-run sixth inning. Jill Crawford slugged her 11th home run to straight-away center field and drove in Reed and Pescatore ahead of her.
Ali McNulty led the Paladins with a 2-for-3 day. LaKerah Barr and Meagen Johnson each had the other two hits.
Johnson (7-9) suffered the loss on the mound allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. She struck out one and walked one. Rachel Henley threw the last 2 2/3 innings and gave up five earned runs.
Four Lady Mocs had two hits apiece, Cochrane, Crawford, Ramirez and Reed. Ramirez and Crawford had three RBI each.

GAME 13: PALADINS ELIMINATE EAGLES 7-2; WILL FACE CHATTANOOGA IN FINALS
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Furman jumped out to an early lead over Georgia Southern in the second meeting between the two teams in the Southern Conference softball championships at Frost Stadium and never relinquished it, downing the Eagles 7-2 Monday morning.
The Paladins took a 3-1 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles put just one more run on the board before Furman added four insurance runs.
Rachel Henley improved to 14-11, recording the win for the Paladins. She struck out six, walked four and gave up two runs on four hits. Tiffany Urena recorded the loss for Georgia Southern giving up one base on balls, two hits and three runs. She falls to 5-6. Crystal Crews pitched four innings in relief striking out two and giving up three runs on six hits. Aimee Littlejohn pitched the final two innings striking out three and giving up one run on two hits.
The Paladins' Kristin White was 3-4, and Jessica Matthews was 2-3. Both players crossed the plate twice for Furman. Meagen Johnson was 1-2, had a sacrifice and knocked in three runs.
Kelly Blazi was 2-3 for the Eagles with one RBI and a stolen base.
The Paladins who were placed in the loser's bracket by the Eagles on Sunday, eliminated Georgia Southern from the tournament and will turn around to face Chattanooga in the championship game.
