UNCG's Penny Thompson Named To All-Regional Squad

LOUISVILLE, KY - The honors continue to pile up for UNCG slugger Penny
Thompson as she was named First-Team All-Southeast Region on May 16.

The 2002 Southern Conference Player of the Year, Thompson led the
league with 13 home runs, just one off the school and conference
record. As a junior, Thompson has already established herself as the
most prolific home run hitter in SoCon history with 27.

This season the third baseman hit .339 and had 14 multi-hit games,
including a team-high 10 game hitting streak. Thompson was also named
First-Team All-SoCon, becoming the first three-time all-conference
selection in school history. She was named SoCon Player of the Week a
league-high three times during the 2002 campaign.

Thompson finished the season in the top five in batting average (.339),
hits (62), RBI (47), runs (38) and slugging percentage (.634) in SoCon
action this season. Her 47 RBI was the second most in the conference
and the fourth best mark ever in UNCG single season history.

Thompson was the lone Southern Conference selection on the All-Region
squad.

The awards were announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association, and selections were based by the Southeast Region's head
coaches.
