College of Charleston Names Assistant Coaches

College of Charleston men's basketball coach Tom Herrion announced May 8 that Dee Vick, James Johnson and Mark Byington have been hired as assistant coaches on his first staff at the College of Charleston.

Vick was the special assistant to men's basketball coach Dave Odom at South Carolina last season. Vick spent two seasons as an assistant at East Carolina (1999-01) and five seasons at Hampden-Sydney (1994-99).

Hampden-Sydney compiled a record of 118-28 (.808) during his tenure and gained four berths in the NCAA Division III national tournament.

Johnson joins the Cougars after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Elon University. Johnson also worked as an assistant at Old Dominion (1997-00), Hargrave Military Academy (1996-97), Longwood College (1995-96) and Ferrum College (1993-95).

Byington joins the staff after having served as an assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy since August, 2001. While at Hargrave his responsibilities including player development, scouting and recruiting. He also worked as a graduate assistant coach at Virginia from 1999 to 2001.

Byington played at UNC Wilmington from 1994 to 1998 earning CAA All-Conference honors as a senior.

"I'm very excited to have Dee, James and Mark on my first staff," said Herrion, who spent the past eight seasons with coach Pete Gillen at Providence and Virginia. "Each have been around some quality basketball people and they will add alot to our basketball program. They are very talented basektball coaches and even better people."
