Georgia Southern Closes Spring Drills With Blue-White Game

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern quarterbacks Trey Hunter and Chaz
Williams combined for 362 yards of total offense
April 20 at Allen E. Paulson Stadium as the Blue squad, led by
Williams, inched by the Hunter's White unit 21-17 in the
21st annual spring game.

Hunter, a redshirt sophomore from nearby Guyton, Ga., accounted for 230 of
GSU's total offensive output of 650 yards and led the
White unit to touchdowns on its first two possessions. In all, Hunter ran
for 118 yards, threw for 73 and was even on the receiving
end of a pass for a 39-yard reception from slotback Kevin Davis on the
fourth play of the game.

But it was Williams, a fellow redshirt sophomore from Apopka, Fla., who
guided the Blue to the game-winning drive, marching his
squad 65 yards in 12 plays over a span of 9:20. Williams, along with
redshirt freshman fullback Jermaine Austin, were responsible
for all but seven yards on their way to the decisive score. Williams went
the final 15 yards on a quarterback draw to give the Blue
a 21-17 lead with 7:41 remaining.

The White unit had three chances to answer, but one drive ended with a punt
while the other was thwarted by a fumble. After
forcing the Blue to punt, the White got one final chance with just 23
seconds left, but a pass from Hunter to senior wide receiver
Derrick Owens fell incomplete to end the game.

"Both quarterbacks drove their respective teams to three scores each, and
really, that's all I can ask of them," GSU head coach
Mike Sewak said. " They've shown a lot of improvement every day since we
started spring practice and today was no exception.
It's perhaps even more impressive to do it in a game like this where
they're playing with all sorts of different combinations."

Redshirt sophomore fullback Hakim Ford opened the scoring in the first
quarter with a one-yard run to put the White up 7-0 just
1:49 into the game. But on the very next play from scrimmage, senior
slotback Mark Myers took a pitch from Williams and outran
the White defense for a 65-yard TD run to knot the game at 7-7.

The White offensive unit answered back, driving 65 yards, the last 14 on a
Zzream Walden scoring run, to take a 14-7 lead that it
would carry into halftime.

Austin's four-yard run at the 8:43 mark of the third quarter tied the game
at 14-all before sophomore Sean Holland nailed a
48-yard field goal to give the White its last lead of the game, a 17-14
advantage with 2:01 left in the third.

"After the first quarter, the defense made some adjustments and it simply
became a good hard-nosed football game. With the
exception of maybe two or three, they kept the big play down to a minimum,"
Sewak said. "I thought it was a good football game.
There was a lot of enthusiasm and emotion out there because they really
competed. There was plenty of good hitting on both sides
of the ball and I'm proud to say that we played Georgia Southern Football
today."
