East Tennessee State Holds Off Davidson, 6-1 (Mar. 29)

DAVIDSON, NC - Conference-leading East Tennessee State remained undefeated in SoCon action by downing the Davidson men's tennis team, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Covington Courts.

The visiting Bucs (8-6, 4-0 SoCon) opened the contest by sweeping the doubles matches. East Tennessee State easily took the first and third matches, but the number two contest went to a tie-breaker. Pablo Sahagun and Alejandro Salazar of ETSU outlasted senior Chad Winebarger and sophomore Rob Gould in the breaker, 10-8.

In singles, three of the six matches went to a deciding third set, but East Tennessee State won all three to claim the victory. Sophomore Jonathan Britt (#4) took out Sahagun in Davidson's (8-8, 2-4) only win, 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Rob Haywood (#3) and freshman Donald Miles (#5) won the second set of their contests before falling in the third. Winebarger rolled in the first set at number one singles. However, the Bucs' Marcos Pavlovich rallied 6-1, 6-3 to cap the comeback.

East Tennessee State was ranked 59th in the country in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

The Wildcats are right back in action tomorrow, hosting UAB in a non-conference match starting at 10 a.m.

Furman Men's Tennis Downs ASU 6-1

BOONE, NC- The Furman men's tennis team downed Appalachian State 6-1
Thursday in Boone.

James Cameron paced the Paladins with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles over Erez Cohen.

Doug Ormsby was the lone Mountaineer to prove victorious in singles competition, winning at the second spot 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 over Chris Henderson.

Robbie Ormsby was the only other Appalachian player to take a singles set. The younger Ormsby lost to Patrick Fillnow in the fourth flight 3-6, 7-6, 7-5.

Furman wins its 6th straight match to improve to 7-11 on the year, 4-0 in the Southern Conference.

Chattanooga Nips Georgia Southern, 4-3

STATESBORO, GA - The Georgia Southern men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in a Southern Conference match at the Hanner Courts on Saturday.

The Eagles won the doubles point as Wojciech Nowak and Darren Clark won at No. 1 doubles and Rohan Williams and Danie Van Den Heever won at No. 2 doubles

However, Chattanooga won four of six singles matches to take the victory. Darren Clark won at No. 2 singles and Mark Finnegan won at No. 3 singles to account for the Georgia Southern wins.

With the loss, Georgia Southern falls to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Eagles will be back in action Saturday traveling to Appalachian State. With the win, Chattanooga improves to 10-8 overall and 7-1 in the conference.

UAB Shuts Out Davidson, 7-0 (Mar. 30)

DAVIDSON, NC - Visiting UAB swept all nine matches versus the host Davidson men's tennis team Saturday morning at Knobloch Tennis Center to earn a 7-0 victory.

The Blazers (13-5) took all three doubles matches for the doubles point. Sophomore Rob Haywood and freshman Donald Miles held their own against nationally-ranked Alex Jung and Tobi Klein, but eventually fell, 8-6.

Each of the singles matches were taken in straight sets by UAB. The closest match was at the number five spot where one break of serve was the difference in each set. UAB's Sanzaruz Zaman outlasted Miles however, 6-4, 7-5.

UAB was ranked 53rd in the country in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

Davidson has dropped its last two matches to fall to 8-9 overall.

The Wildcats finish their seven-match homestand Tuesday, April 2, versus UNC Greensboro. Matches are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
