GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- For the first time since 1990 a Furman player
will be the defending champion at the Furman Intercollegiate, slated for
Friday through Sunday, March 22-24, at the Furman University Golf Course.
Senior Kirk Satterfield, who used a first-place finish at the 2001
Intercollegiate to ignite a strong spring that ended with an individual
berth in the NCAA Championships, was the first Paladin to take medalist
honors at Furman's home tournament since 1990, when Todd White won his
second consecutive title. Following his Furman Intercollegiate victory,
Satterfield placed third at Augusta State, fifth at Wofford, 13th at the
Southern Conference, and fifth at the NCAA East Regional to become the
first Paladin to qualify for the National Championship as an individual
since White did so in 1989.
Adding to the White-Satterfield similarities was Kirk's three-round 208
total in last year's Intercollegiate, which was the lowest since Sean
Farrell's 208 in 1996, and equaled White's 1991 total.
In addition to Satterfield, the 19th-ranked Hokies of Virginia Tech will
mount a defense to hold onto the Furman Intercollegiate team title, which
Tech won last year with a three-round 876, defeating the Paladins by four
strokes. Furman, which has not won an Intercollegiate team title since
1986, 33rd-ranked Ohio State, and No. 48 Virginia will be favorites to
challenge the Hokies. With eight league teams competing, the tounament
should also shape up as a fine preview to the Southern Conference
Championship, scheduled for April 19-21 at Furman.
A complete list of the Furman Intercolleigate field follows. A practice
round will be held Thursday, with the 54-hole competition running Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. Past medalists include Matt Kuchar (Ga. Tech, 1997),
David Duval (Ga. Tech, 1991), Billy Andrade (Wake Forest, 1985), Brad Faxon
(Furman, 1983), Mark Calcavecchia (Florida, 1979), Jay Haas (Wake Forest,
1976) and Curtis Strange (Wake Forest, 1974).
