Wrestling 2/23/2002 9:23:00 AM Southern Conference VMI Wrestling Defeats Davidson, 54-0 and Campbell, 29-6 (Feb. 23) 11 Wins Most in a Season Most Since 1995-96DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The VMI Wrestling team (11-4, 4-1 Southern Conference) defeated Davidson, 54-0 and Campbell, 29-6 at Davidson's Belk Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Keydets finish the regular season with their most wins since the 1995-96 campaign, when they also won 11.The Keydets defeated Davidson (0-15, 0-5 SoCon) on the strength of six forfeits. The 54 points scored by VMI were the most by a Keydet team since Jan. 11, 1996, when VMI defeated Longwood, 56-6. Of the matches that were wrestled, VMI freshman Mike Parsons (Loudonville, Ohio/ Lakeville) (26-6, 5-0 SoCon) defeated Grant Doornbos, 8-2 at 149 lbs. Junior Adam Britt (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) (35-7, 4-1 SoCon) scored a technical fall over Jeff Bender, 21-5 at 157 lbs. Freshman Jason Kontopedes (Beaverdam, Va./ Boys Ranch) (16-12, 4-1 SoCon) won by disqualification over Mo Idiby. Junior 174-pounder Matt Erwin (South Vienna, Ohio/ Graham) (29-6, 4-1 SoCon) scored a major decision over Wildcat Mark O'Hair, 13-4.Against Campbell (7-6), the Keydets won nine of 10 matches, including the first eight and rolled to the 23-point win. Major decisions were recorded by Britt, who defeated Josh McConnell, 13-3 and senior Brian Toney (Boones Mill, Va./ Franklin County) (18-17, 4-1 SoCon), who defeated Josh McConnell, 13-3. Toney was wrestling in his final dual match as a Keydet.The Keydets will next wrestle on March 9 at the Southern Conference Championships. The event will be held at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C., on the campus of North Carolina State University. It will be held in conjunction with the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships as part Mat Jam 2002.
