Women's Basketball 2/14/2002 3:43:00 PM Southern Conference Women's Basketball Capsule for February 14 Schott Scores 27 For 'Cats, But Upset Bid Fails As UNC Greensboro Wins 84-73DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson put forth a valiant effort Thursday night but couldn't overcome a tough UNC Greensboro squad that connected on 61.3% of its second-half shots. The Wildcats fell to the Spartans 84-73 in Southern Conference women's basketball at Belk Arena.Davidson (8-16, 4-11 SoCon) was led on the evening by junior forward Bethany Schott (Aurora, Colo.) and her 27 points. Samika Foster led the way for UNCG (17-7, 12-3 SoCon) with 18 points in a winning effort. The Wildcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a Schott three, but fell behind 12-7 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. Sophomore center Meghan Bryant (Huntersville, N.C.) brought the team to within three, 12-9, on a lay-in. UNCG quickly extended the lead to 10 points, 26-16, on a Foster basket with 5:42 in the first period.A three-point basket by senior guard Janna Magette (Hoover, Ala.) ignited a 10-2 run over the final 82 second of the first half. The final three points of the run came on a three-point play by freshman forwardEmily Callahan (Charlotte, N.C.). The two teams were tied 30 apiece at the intermission.The second half was much the same as the first. Davidson scored first and then quickly got behind. This time, however, they weren't able to make a complete comeback. Another jumper by Foster gave UNC Greensboro a 42-37 lead with 16:19 to play. They pushed the lead to 53-42 on a three-point play by Foster with 13:21 to go in the game. The lead would eventually get to as many as 14 points before the Wildcats attempted to make a comeback.A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Ashley Hallsted (San Mateo, Calif.) and a three by Magette sliced the lead to just six points, 70-64, with 3:20 on the clock, but Davidson would never get any closer.THe Spartans converted eight-of-nine free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.UNC Greensboro held a slim rebounding edge on the evening, 36-34, and forced the Wildcats to commit 21 turnovers on the evening. Davidson was more effective from the floor connecting on 48.3% of its shots compared to 46.2% for UNCG, but the Spartans had 12 more free throws attempts for the game which proved costly for Davidson. In addition to Schott's 27 points, Bryant added a double-double with 14points and 10 rebounds along with tying a school record with six blocked shots. Hallsted and Magette scored 13 and 10 points respectively to round out the Wildcats in double figures.UNCG's Amanda Eaton scored a career-high 16 points while three other Spartans - Jacinda Lambert (14), Brianne Dodgen (10) and Jennifer Hart (10) - also scored in double figures.Davidson will celebrate "Senior Day" as they host Chattanooga, Saturday February 16 at 3 p.m. UNC Greensboro will host East Tennessee State Saturday also at 3 p.m.
