Women's Basketball 2/1/2002 4:55:00 AM Southern Conference Women's Basketball Capsule for January 31 Davidson Tops Gardner-Webb 68-56DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson Wildcats held on for a 68-56 victory over a scrappy Gardner-Webb team Thursday night in a non-conference basketball game at Belk Arena before a crowd of 306.Davidson (8-11) had four players in double figures on the night and were led by sophomore center Meghan Bryant, (Huntersville, N.C.) who had 14 points. Casey Collins led Gardner-Webb (3-18) with a game-high 22 points.The Wildcats fell behind early, 10-2, but eventually tied the game, 10-10, with 10:35 to play on a layup by Bryant. Davidson, which wasmired in a shooting slump throughout the game, fell behind again quickly. Freshman forward Emily Callahan tied the score again, 20-20, on a layin with 6:43 to play in the first.A three-point basket by sophomore guard Lindsay Shade (Atlanta, Ga.) put Davidson ahead for the first time, 25-24, with 2:09 to play in the opening period. Senior guard Janna Magette (Hoover, Ala.) scored two more points to give the 'Cats a three-point cushion that held tointermission.The Wildcats were held scoreless for the first two minutes of the half, but were able to maintain their slim lead. The Lady Bulldogs tied the score, 32-32, on a Collins' three-pointer with 15:30 to play. A Callahan layup with 11:01 to play put the 'Cats up seven points, 41-34, butGardner-Webb just wouldn't go away. Maggie Tomporek's basket with just under five minutes to play put the Lady Bulldogs up two, 51-49.Magette was fouled with 3:44 to play and tied the game, 52-52. The 'Cats then reeled off a 16-4 run to close the game and seal the victory. In addition to Bryant's 14 points, three Wildcats scored in double figures. Magette scored 13 points while sophomore guard Ashley Hallsted(San Mateo, Calif.) and sophomore guard Robyn Flewelling (Okemos, Mich.) scored 12 and 11 respectively. Bryant was also the team's leadingrebounder on the evening with nine.As a team, the Wildcats shot a disappointing 36.7% (22-of-60) and were outrebounded 45-44 by Gardner-Webb. Davidson sank 20-of-23 free throws(87.0%) and committed 17 turnovers compared to 19 by the Lady Bulldogs.Davidson travels to UNC Greensboro Saturday, February 2, for a 5:00 game with the SoCon-leading Lady Spartans. Gardner-Webb hosts TexasA&M-Corpus Christi this Saturday at 6:00.
