Davidson Defeats Cross-County Rival Charlotte in Women's Hoops, 81-76

DAVIDSON, N.C. - For the second consecutive year, the Davidson women's basketball team knocked off Charlotte, this time by a score of 81-76, Tuesday night in Belk Arena. The win is Davidson's second in a row and pushes the Wildcats' record to 2-3 while the 49ers fall to an even 3-3.

"We had a great team effort on defense and a good shooting night on offense," summed up Davidson head coach Annette Watts.

The first half was hotly contested with five ties and five lead changes. Two free throws by senior Bethany Schott knotted the score at 22 with 7:51 remaining, but that would be the last tie of the game.

Charlotte's Monica League hit a jumper a few seconds later to put the 49ers up by two, 24-22. From there, the Wildcats responded with a 12-4 stretch to gain some breathing room and a 34-28 advantage. A putback by freshman Katie Delk with two seconds left in the half gave the 'Cats a 39-32 lead at the break.

Early in the second stanza, Charlotte used three pointers by Andrea Davidson and Leslie Cook to creep to within one at 45-44 with 16:31 left in regulation. On Davidson's next possession, freshman Janell Crayton put back a Robyn Flewelling shot to keep the host Wildcats ahead, 47-44.

The Wildcats continued to slowly build their lead back up and eventually extended it to 13 on a Courtney Laird free throw to make the count 62-49 in favor of the 'Cats with 9:34 showing on the clock. Charlotte never seriously challenged Davidson the rest of the way, giving the Wildcats a victory in their home opener.

Schott and junior Ashley Hallsted paced Davidson, scoring over 20 points each. Schott finished with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-7 shooting while Hallsted had 21 points and five assists.

Alicia Abernathy tallied 16 points and a game-best seven boards for Charlotte in the loss.

Davidson hits the road again this weekend to take on Winthrop on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1:30 p.m. The 49ers return to action at Virginia Commonwealth this Saturday as well. Game time is 7 p.m..

#22/23 SOUTH CAROLINA 75, GEORGIA SOUTHERN 54
South Carolina used a 20-5 run over the last eight minutes of the contest to pull away from from a pesky Georgia Southern team, 75-54 Tuesday night at the Carolina Center.
Mimi Lindsey scored 14 points to pace the Eagles, while Tiffany Lanier recorded 10 steals, a Georgia Southern single-game record.

The Eagles led by as much as three in the early going. Lindsey's put-back of a Shawnica Hill miss gave Georgia Southern a 13-10 lead six and a hlaf minutes into the game. The Gamecocks closed the first half on an 18-8 spurt that gave USC a 44-34 halftime advantage.

South Carolina opened up the second half with an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 13, but Georgia Southern used a 10-2 set of its own to cut the deficit to four. Down 51-38, Kristy McCorkle started the run with a jumper, and Adrienne Early's layup with 11:25 to go made the score 53-49.

After Vania Redd's layup at the 11:20 mark pushed the advantage back to six, both teams went the next 3:11 without scoring before Jocelyn Penn's jumper. The Eagles would not crack the scoreboard again until the 6:26 mark, and would add only one more field goal the rest of the contest.

Hill netted double-figures for the fourth time this season with 12 points, while McCorkle tied a career-best with 10. USC was led by Jocelyn Penn who recorded 26 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Kelly Morrone posted 17 as she went five for nine from behind the arc.

The Eagles return to action on Sunday, as the host Appalachian State in their Southern Conference opener.
