Three SoCon Volleyball Players Named to AVCA All-Region Team

SPARTANBURG, SC -- College of Charleston setter Mary Sabatino and Georgia Southern outside hitter Martina Veiglova were selected to the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) All-Region (South) team this week. Additionally, College of Charleston outside hitter Stephanie Ballard received an Honorable Mention nod.

Sabatino, a senior from Glen Ellyn, IL, is the all-time SoCon and College of Charleston leader in career assists and her 1,485 assists this season led the league. Sabatino is also ranked 29th nationally averaging 12.8 assists per game. She was named to the first team all-league team as well as being named the 2002 SoCon Volleyball Tournament MVP.

Veiglova, a junior from Bratislava, Slovakia, was selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Year, as well as to the first team all-league team. She finished the season with 686 kills, averaging 5.44 per game. She recorded 19 double-doubles and had 33 games with double-digit kills. Veiglova's 686 kills broke a nine-year SoCon record for single season kills, eclipsing the previous record by 30 kills.

Ballard, a junior from Muncie, IN, was named to the first team all-league team as well as the SoCon all-tournament team. She finished the 2002 season with 475 kills and a .312 hitting percentage.
