Chattanooga 82, Bradley 70

PEORIA, Ill. -- Tennessee-Chattanooga guard Tim Parker scored a
game-high 31 points leading the visiting Mocs (3-1) to a 82-70
non-conference men's basketball victory at Bradley (1-2) in front of
9,014 fans Saturday night at Carver Arena.

Alphonso Pugh contributed a double-double off the bench for the visitors
with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while guard Jason Rogan
chipped in with 12 points for Chattanooga. Bradley junior guard Phillip
Gilbert led the Braves with 24 points. Junior guard James Gillingham
added 14 points before fouling out with 1:27 left to play and sophomore
forward Danny Granger scored 11 points in just 19 minutes of action
before fouling out with 9:07 to go.

Already playing short-handed due to the one-game suspension of starting
point guard Marcello Robinson for a fighting Monday night at
Loyola-Chicago, foul trouble and injuries helped put the Braves into a
tougher situation Saturday. Starting center Brandyn Heemskerk took an
elbow above the eye early in the second half and did not return after
having the wound closed. After picking up his third and fourth fouls in
the first 55 seconds of the second half, Bradley played the next eight
minutes without Granger, who came into the game averaging 23.5 points
and 15.5 rebounds per game.

Chattanooga took advantage of Granger's absence, extending a 35-33 lead
when he picked up his fourth foul to 57-43 when Pugh got behind the
Braves defense for a slam with 12:21 left to play. With the gap
narrowed to 57-45 by the 12:00 media timeout, Granger checked back in
and provided an immediate spark by scoring the first four points in a
12-3 Bradley run that cut the deficit to 60-57 following a Gillingham
layup with 9:19 remaining.

Trying for a tie-up in a Bradley trap, however, Granger picked up his
fifth foul with 9:07 left. Aaron Morgan scored on a follow slam
immediately after Granger's disqualification and the Mocs never allowed
Bradley closer than five points the rest of the way.

Chattanooga did most of its damage from 3-point territory. Led by
Parker's 7-for-9 effort from behind the arc, the Mocs converted 13-of-29
(.448) 3-point attempts for the game. The Braves were just 6-for-17
(.353) from 3-point territory. Bradley also struggled at the free throw
line, converting only 12-of-22 (.545) attempts.

Chattanooga will continue its Central Illinois, Missouri Valley
Conference road trip Monday when the Mocs visit Bradley's Interstate-74
rival Illinois State. The Braves will have a week off before returning
to action Dec. 7 versus NCAA Division II Arkansas-Monticello at Carver
Arena.


Davidson 105, Washington & Lee 48

DAVIDSON, N.C. - In the first game between Davidson and Washington & Lee since Feb. 10, 1959, the Wildcats connected on a school-record 19 three-pointers, including six from senior Peter Anderer, to overwhelm the visiting Generals on Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena, 105-48. With the victory, the Wildcats improved to 2-1 on the young season, while W&L fell to the same record.

The Wildcats displayed incredible accuracy on all their shots throughout the game, with a field goal percentage of 61.1 percent (33-of-54), three-point field goal percentage of 67.9 percent (19-of-28) and free throw percentage of 80 percent (20-of-25).

Davidson led from the opening possession, as senior Michel Lusakueno hit a short jumper in the lane to start the onslaught. After just six and a half minutes of play, the Wildcats led by 17. Washington & Lee maintained that deficit for the next six minutes before Davidson went on a 19-5 run to end the half with the score at 52-22.

Anderer opened the second half by scoring 11 of Davidson's first 15 points, including a trio of trifectas, as the 'Cats increased the lead to 43.

The record-tying three-pointer came with 2:28 left to play when freshman Matt McKillop - son of Davidson head coach Bob McKillop - sank his fourth trey of the afternoon. Another freshman, Brendan Winters, drilled a three-pointer on the next Wildcat possession to set the new mark.

Anderer finished the afternoon with a game-high 22 points, thanks to hitting 6-of-8 from behind the arc. Freshman Ian Johnson reached double figures for the third straight game with 17 points, while McKillop scored 16, sinking 4-of-5 three-pointers. Other Wildcats with at least 10 points were Winters with 14 and senior Wayne Bernard with 11.

While Davidson was lighting up the scoreboard, the Generals were finding it difficult to score. Washington & Lee managed to shoot a paltry 29.4 percent (15-of-51), including 15 percent (3-of-20) from long distance. The Generals didn't hurt themselves at the free throw line, however, sinking all but one of their 16 foul shots.

The only statistical category in which the Generals came out ahead was on the boards, outrebounding the Wildcats, 32-30.

Davidson returns to the court tomorrow afternoon for a game against another Division III school, Washington (Md.) College. Last week, the Shoremen (1-2) lost to Washington & Lee in the W&L Tip-Off Classic, 87-72. Game time at Belk Arena is slated for 3 p.m.

Western Carolina 94, Southeastern College 55

Cullowhee, N.C. - After missing the first two games of the season due to an injury, junior Rans Brempong registered a double-double in his first action of the year to lead Western Carolina (2-1) to a 94-55 victory over Southeastern College (4-7) Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.

Brempong, who broke a bone in his left hand on Nov. 5, scored 16 points, which is his second-highest output of his career, and grabbed 10 rebounds in recording his third career double-double. The Thornhill, Ontario, native finished the game by making 6-of-10 shots from the field, getting five boards on each end of the floor, blocking two shots and coming away with three steals.

Western's Kevin Martin gave his Cats an early 5-0 lead, draining a 3-pointer and converting a layup in the first 40 seconds of the game. However, Southeastern would score seven unanswered as part of an 11-4 run to take a two-point lead, 11-9, four minutes into the contest. Terrence Woodyard hit a layup to tie the contest, then Jared Outing connected on a pair of free throws to put WCU up two, 13-11, a lead the Cats would not relinquish the remainder of the game.

Woodyard's layup to tie the game was part of a 15-3 run by the Catamounts. The run was capped by an Alex Osipovitch 3-pointer to make the score 24-14. The Crusaders would trim its deficit to six three times in the first half, the last coming a 6:59 with WCU leading 31-25. From that point, Western went on a 19-4 run to lead by 21, 50-29, with 1:12 left before halftime. A 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Southeastern's Marcus McDonald made the score 52-34 at the break, but that is as close as the Crusaders would get the rest of the contest.

Kori Hatcher made two free throws as the season half began to push the Cats' lead to 20. Western, who held Southeastern to just 21 second-half points, gradually pulled away throughout the final 20 minutes, taking its largest lead of the game with 1:01. That bucket, scored by Jared Outing, provided the final margin, 94-55.

In addition to Brempong, Martin, Osipovitch and Outing scored in double figures with 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively. Osipovitch, who had career highs in points and rebounds, added eight boards while Outing had seven. Hatcher had seven points, seven assists and six rebounds. Overall, Western out-rebounded the Crusaders 55-25 and allowed Southeastern just two offensive rebound for the contest.

Southeastern was led by Jeremy Holcombe's eight points, while Mark MacFawn, Phillip Hooks and McDonald each scored seven points.

Western Carolina will return to action Monday (Dec. 2) versus regional rival UNC Asheville as part of a doubleheader in the Asheville Civic Center. The Lady Cats and Bulldogs will tip-off at 5:30 pm with the men's contest set to start at approximately 7:30 pm.

UNC Wilmington 78, East Tennessee State 57

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior guard Brett Blizzard led four players in double figures with 21 points, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, as UNC Wilmington whipped East Tennessee State, 78-57, in college men's basketball action Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks, playing their home opener, won their second straight and improved to 2-1 with the non-conference victory. The Buccaneers fell to 1-2 in the new season.

Blizzard made 8-of-16 shots and added five assists to pace the Seahawks. Junior forward Anthony Terrell collected 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds, senior center Craig Callahan chipped in 12 and junior guard Tim Burnette scored 12.

Sophomore guard Tiras Wade had 21 points and Tim Smith had 14 points for ETSU. Tiras added a team-high six rebounds.

After building a 42-31 lead at intermission, Terrell made back-to-back baskets to open the second half and give the Seahawks a 46-31 cushion with 19:17 remaining. ETSU battled back, however, to cut the deficit to 46-39 with an eight-point run. A turnaround jumper by Jerald Fields with 16:17 left brought the Buccaneers to within seven points.

Callahan scored a bucket from close range and Blizzard canned a trey from the right corner to push the lead back to 51-39 and the Seahawks went on another seven-point spurt to go ahead, 60-45, on Burnette's 3-pointer with 10:31 left. A 3-pointer by Burnette with 6:47 gave the Seahawks their largest lead, 67-46.

The Seahawks took command early in the first half and built a 15-point lead before settling for a 42-31 advantage at intermission. Tim Burnette converted a conventional 3-point play at 5:47 to give UNCW a 36-21 lead.

The Seahawks visit Fairfield Monday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup at Harbor Yard Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. The Buccaneers visit Vanderbilt next Wednesday, Dec. 4, for an 8 p.m. tipoff.

South Carolina 71, Appalachian State 56

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Chuck Eidson scored 16 points and became South Carolina's all-time steals leader in a 71-56 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday night.


Carlos Powell had 15 points and Chris Warren 13 for the Gamecocks (3-0). But it was their defense, led by Eidson, that did the job against the Mountainaeers (2-1).


Appalachian State entered the game shooting 41 percent from three-point range. But the Gamecocks held them to just 2-of-23 from behind the arc.


Eidson chipped in two steals to give him 224 in his career, passing former leader Barry Manning.


Shawn Hall led Appalachian State with 15 points, but like his teammates was ice cold from the outside. He was 10-of-18 on 3-pointers on the season. However, Hall hit only one of his 10 long-range tries.


South Carolina went 5-of-9 on 3-pointers to lead 37-23 at the half.


The biggest problem for South Carolina may have been its recently opened 18,000-seat Carolina Center.


An automated fire alarm warning people to leave the building went off as starting lineups were being introduced. The alarm was set off by smoke in the concession area. There was no fire emergency and game was delayed 16 minutes.

Georgia Southern 112, North Georgia 85

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Julius Jenkins scored 22 points to lead five Eagles in double figures and pace Georgia Southern to a 112-85 win over North Georgia Saturday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Frank Bennett posted his second straight double-double with 16 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. The 112 points scored by the Eagles was the most since GSU downed Centenary 119-91 on January 16, 1992.
Georgia Southern (3-1) trailed by a point with 15 minutes to play in the first half when the Eagles went on a 16-5 run over the next four and a half minutes to take a 25-15 lead. Jenkins started the spurt with a jumper, and Kenny Faulk drilled six of his 16 points in the span.
North Georgia (3-5) answered later in the frame with a 9-0 run to cut the GSU lead to 39-33 with four minutes to go in the half, but Georgia Southern finished the stanza outscoring the Saints 10-4 to take a 49-37 lead into the intermission.
The Eagles extended the lead further to begin the second half. Jenkins and Faulk combined to score eight points in a minute, and Bennett's fast-break lay-in gave Georgia Southern a 70-48 lead with 12 minutes to play.
The Saints came back with a 20-5 over the next three and a half minutes, keyed by 10 points from Kendrick Johnson over the span. But the Eagle answered with a 16-2 set of their own, with Jean Francois accumulating eight of his season-high 15 points in the three minute spurt to give GSU a 23-point advantage. Marcus Byams' leaner with seven seconds to go gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 27 points and sealed the final margin.
Georgia Southern shot 59.2 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Saints 51-33. The Eagles forced 30 North Georgia turnovers and grabbed 14 steals.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, December 3, traveling to Savannah State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.






College of Charleston 66, Oklahoma State 58

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Thomas Mobley and Troy Wheless scored 17 points
apiece as College of Charleston defeated Oklahoma State 66-58 Friday in the
semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.

The full-court zone press of the Cougars (4-0) disrupted the Oklahoma State
offense throughout the game. The Cowboys shot only 44 percent for the game,
including just 1-for-10 from 3-point territory.

Tony Allen scored 23 points for Oklahoma State (2-1).

The first half featured three ties and nine lead changes. College of
Charleston took its biggest lead of the first half at 29-24 with 1:16
remaining, and the Cougars led 31-28 when Zeke Johnson hit a jump shot as
time expired.

Mobley hit all four of his field-goal attempts in the first half including
two 3-pointers.

A 12-2 run gave College of Charleston a 53-39 lead midway through the
second. The Cowboys closed to 61-54 with 3:18 left, but a 3-pointer by
Wheless with 1:27 remaining put the game out of reach.

Oklahoma State outrebounded the Cougars 35-22 but committed 24 turnovers.
College of Charleston had 13 steals.
