SoCon Names Volleyball All-Conference Team (2002)

SPARTANBURG, SC - The Southern Conference today announced its Volleyball All-Conference teams and awards. The squad is voted upon by the conference's head coaches.

Georgia Southern outside hitter Martina Veiglova was selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Year. She finished the season with 622 kills, averaging 5.36 per game. She recorded 17 double-doubles and had 30 games with double-digit kills. Veiglova was joined on the first team by teammate, libero (defensive specialist) Megan Lippi.

The College of Charleston placed two on the first team with setter Mary Sabatino and outside hitter Stephanie Ballard. Abby Simon, a right side hitter from Furman, was selected to the first team and was joined by middle blockers Roberta Quis from Davidson and Sara Komosinski from Western Carolina.

Nicole Ryan, a freshman outside hitter from East Tennessee State, was selected as the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. She was ranked second in the conference averaging 4.03 kills per game with 468 total kills on the season.

Georgia Southern's Kerry Messersmith, in her second year as the Eagles' head coach, received the Coach of the Year award. Messersmith led the Eagles to a 24-8 overall record and a share of the regular season championship with an 18-2 mark in Southern Conference play.
